The Arch Wiki article for the 3G modem seems to be way outdated...
But anyway, my modem is a Huawei E220.
I just installed wvdial and edited the conf file. Then I modprobe'd ppp-generic and tried to just wvdial.
The config seems to be correct and the modem seems to connect, I get an IP and everything... The light on the modem is glowing and it should be working. But... Packages aren't going through because I can't even ping anything.
On Ubuntu it works if you just select the right operator after a popup. It's times like these when Ubuntu seems nice because you can't figure out why something doesn't work and it should be really simple
Edit: In my errors.log there's this:
Could not determine remote IP address: defaulting to 10.64.64.64
Cannot determine ethernet address for proxy ARP

can you ping an ip address (ie: ping 74.125.67.100)? if you can than maybe you need to update your /etc/resolf.conf

Nope, I can't ping.
E: Apparently I'm just not receiving any data: "received 0 bytes."

Apparently, now I can ping and data goes through fine, but I still lack DNS.
wvdial correctly puts up the correct DNS servers, or atleast seems to. Meh. This is very annoying.
(I don't even know how I managed to get this far, it just happened...)

The correct DNS servers have to be in /etc/resolv.conf - I'm not sure if that's what you mean by "puts up".

The username/password might be incorrect for your provider.
If you have vodafone , try vodafone as user AND as password .
If that doesn' t help, check the last link on the wiki page (pointing to the mybroadband.co.za site).
That site has very good info on 3G modems.
Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
(A works at time B) && (time C > time B ) ≠ (A works at time C)

Got it to work now!
Forgot to add "nameserver x.x.x.x" into my resolv.conf, only had "x.x.x.x" and apparently it doesn't work that way.
Maybe getting this thing to work is way easier than I thought, I just failed hard at a couple of simple issues
