lsusb Outputs Nothing. Is that normal? [SOLVED]

Hello,

I'm trying to get my integrated webcam working on a lenovo x200 and I was unable to find any information about the chipset that the model uses by searching on google. lspci outputs:

00:1d.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #3 (rev 03)
00:1d.7 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller #1 (rev 03)

03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01)

and lsusb outputs nothing (even after running "hwd -u" which I thought might help for some reason). This should be giving me something even without anything connected to a usb port, right? Does anybody have any advice?

Yes it should. It would at least tell you the number of ports that you have by giving their ids.

Do you get any error messages? Check dmesg immediately after running lsusb

Re: lsusb Outputs Nothing. Is that normal? [SOLVED]

Nothing new appears in the output of dmesg after running lsusb. Running 'dmesg|grep usb' gives me the following:

ehci_hcd: Unknown symbol usb_hcd_pci_suspend
ehci_hcd: Unknown symbol usb_free_urb
ehci_hcd: Unknown symbol usb_hub_tt_clear_buffer
ehci_hcd: Unknown symbol usb_hcd_resume_root_hub
ehci_hcd: Unknown symbol usb_hcd_pci_probe
ehci_hcd: Unknown symbol usb_hcd_unlink_urb_from_ep
ehci_hcd: Unknown symbol usb_disabled
ehci_hcd: Unknown symbol usb_hcd_check_unlink_urb
ehci_hcd: Unknown symbol usb_hcds_loaded
ehci_hcd: Unknown symbol usb_calc_bus_time
ehci_hcd: Unknown symbol usb_hcd_pci_shutdown
ehci_hcd: Unknown symbol usb_hcd_link_urb_to_ep
ehci_hcd: Unknown symbol usb_hcd_pci_resume
ehci_hcd: Unknown symbol usb_get_urb
ehci_hcd: Unknown symbol usb_hcd_giveback_urb
ehci_hcd: Unknown symbol usb_hcd_poll_rh_status
ehci_hcd: Unknown symbol usb_hcd_pci_remove
ehci_hcd: Unknown symbol usb_root_hub_lost_power
uhci_hcd: Unknown symbol usb_hcd_pci_suspend
uhci_hcd: Unknown symbol usb_hcd_resume_root_hub
uhci_hcd: Unknown symbol usb_hcd_pci_probe
uhci_hcd: Unknown symbol usb_hcd_unlink_urb_from_ep
uhci_hcd: Unknown symbol usb_disabled
uhci_hcd: Unknown symbol usb_hcd_check_unlink_urb
uhci_hcd: Unknown symbol usb_hcds_loaded
uhci_hcd: Unknown symbol usb_calc_bus_time
uhci_hcd: Unknown symbol usb_hcd_link_urb_to_ep
uhci_hcd: Unknown symbol usb_hcd_pci_resume
uhci_hcd: Unknown symbol usb_hcd_giveback_urb
uhci_hcd: Unknown symbol usb_hcd_poll_rh_status
uhci_hcd: Unknown symbol usb_hcd_pci_remove
uhci_hcd: Unknown symbol usb_root_hub_lost_power

All of this information actually appears multiple times, but I doubt that's relevant.

Doing some searching on errors like this, turned up this link: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=18762 . The solution from that thread is just: "[solved] heh, guess it helps to have /boot mounted when you update the kernel eh?  doH!!" That isn't what happened with me, but it does sound related to kernel modules. From rc.conf:

MOD_AUTOLOAD="yes"
#MOD_BLACKLIST=() #deprecated
MODULES=(e1000e ath5k ath_hal ath_pci wlan snd-mixer-oss snd-pcm-oss snd-hwdep snd-page-alloc snd-pcm snd-timer snd snd-hda-intel soundcore acpi_cpufreq cpufreq_ondemand cpufreq_powersave !snd_pcsp !pcspkr dm-crypt aes-i586)

Thanks a lot for trying to help me out.

Re: lsusb Outputs Nothing. Is that normal? [SOLVED]

After reading that last post I decided to check out my /boot/grub/menu.lst and see what was going on. It turns out that I had added some kernel argument when I was trying to get gensplash working. I had changed initrd back to normal when I was done with it but had forgotten to remove the kernel argument (I think it was just "theme:darch").  After fixing this lsusb worked fine and I was even able to get my webcam working!
