[Solved]Can I install arch without a swap partition ？

I only have one primary partition free to install arch, with 3 primary partition and 1 extend partition, I have no other choice except install without swap partition.

Is there any suggestion? I will try it until I get a U storage to write .img in.

It should just work. I normally do this, and then create one in a file afterwards. There is no performance penalty to having swap in a file.

I have read some topics that said the default setup script won't allow you to skip the swap mounting step.
then I read the <Using the quickinst Script to Install Arch Linux> in wiki. But I am not familar with this kind of installation.
So I am a little worried wether the 2009.2.img will allow me to skip this step.

I've never used a swap partition or swap file at all while being an Arch user (got 3GB RAM).

Never had any ill-effects due to this.

Sure, it's perfectly possible to use any linux system without swap. including arch.

There are 2 ways to do disk partitioning in /arch/setup:
1) autoprepare. with this method, you pick a disk (a disk you want to use entirely). you will be asked some questions (including how big swap should be). this method will create the partitions with the sizes you mention (/boot, swap, / and /home) optionally you can add additional fs'es
2) manual. the installer can launch cfdisk for you if you need to alter partitions (if you want this), and after that you can define pretty much your stuff the way you like it (eg no swap) iirc. i'm not 100% sure though.

Frankly I don't understand why you say "I have no choice", if you don't have enough partitions, you can always create additional ones.

Ever since I switched to flash SSDs a few years ago, I have not used any swap partitions or files. Never have had any problems, installing or using. I've always been able to skip this step. The Archlinux installer makes very few assumptions and considers all crazy installs equally valid. Don't know about the most recent installer, but I hope you still can.

Regarding running without swap: OOMs are pretty rare, but I also have it set up to start beeping/walling/popups when ram hits 95%. (OOM only ever happened when I wrote dumb code, but it also teaches you a lot.)

Beacuse only less than four primary partitions are allowed on a disk?(certainly you can use extend partition to add more logical partitions)

I already have three primary partitions and one extend partition, so there is "no choice" to add a additional partition except resizing one ot the logical partition.

Depending on how important the data on one of those primary partitions is, you can actually use GParted, to copy over the data to the extended partition/external drive, unallocate it, then create another extended partition in the newly created space...and then go from there..

Admittedly, its a lot of work and hassle.

I am surprised that this was not suggested. It won't be helpful at install time but post install, if you want a swap space, just as sort of a "parachute" should you need it you can make a swapfile using this post

You can even add the entry of the file to fstab.

It's a CJK fullwidth question mark. You can get fullwidth text with kakasi in AUR and

echo testing?! | kakasi -i utf8 -o utf8 -aE

edit: by the way, utf8 is only in kakasi-cvs

select the NONE when prompt the swap partition mount point, now the system works well
