Looking for volunteer to add a wiki entry on how Linux uses RAM [DONE]

I'm looking for someone that can clearly and concisely explain how Linux uses RAM to add an entry to the wiki. It doesn't need to be an in depth article on how it's done (although links are welcome), but rather something to explain reserved, shared, buffered, and cached memory, to people new to the subject. It comes as quite a shock to many when they see all four gigabytes of their shiny new RAM is being used up before they launch their favorite game, and I'd like to have somewhere central to point them to. I understand that this information is easy enough to find in a search engine, but usually that's after one has some understanding on what to search for.

Any article (ie, title) in particular you'd like?

Sounds like a Frequently Asked Question to me...

It is a frequently asked question. It seems like I've seen it at least 100 times since I've been at Arch.

I don't really have much of an opinion on what it should be called or even where it's located in the wiki. I'm just hoping that someone with a good understanding of RAM usage in Linux would be able to educate those that don't.

This a good idea. IMHO users can still search the web to get an idea about the subject. When I switched to Linux my time to spend on reading about OS etc., got increased.I put a link here which may also help http://mail.nl.linux.org/linux-mm/2003-03/msg00077.html.

Why write a new article? there are articles enough on the interwebs. just link to them.
http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/2770 for example.

As I said before, until one knows what to search for, it's a little illusive. I believe that having an entry that explains the basics will give people unfamiliar with the topic something to start with.

That's great! It's perfect for sending people to when they're getting started. Thanks a lot.
