I have been having problems with my volume for a while now. I have it on maximum volume, and have trouble hearing my girlfriend on Skype. It's getting to the point where she sometimes has to yell into her phone, and I still have trouble hearing her. Could someone please help me?
I'm not about to try OSS, either. I did, and it caused more problems than it solved.

Have you tried
alsamixer
and then
alsactl store
There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !

Have you tried fooling with _all_ the different volumes in alsamixer?

Wich one is your sound card?
Mine is a Realtek ALC883 and sound was really low, even in others OSs. So, my solution was a cheap pci sound card, you can do that or buy a nice amplifier...of course, if your cards it's a similar one.

I should note that this is affecting my speaker volume too.

HDA ATI SB is what my sound card also shows up as in Linux. It is really a Conexant CX20651 (SmartAudio 221/Hermosa). The sound volume really sucks anywhere else besides on Vista, and, yes, it's even worse with OSS. The best thing you can do is to edit your ALSA configuration and use one of the LADSPA amplifier or equalizer plug-ins to make the volume louder.

Anyway, keep in mind that if you do that, your sound quality wouldn't be the same. If you don't know how to equalize good or how to use an amplifier plugin without getting into distortion, it may be a good idea to buy an amplifier or a cheap (or expensive, it's up to you :-)) sound card.
BTW, thanks Wintervenom for the advice, I'll try it with my onboard sound card to see if I can get decent volume.
