I just installed arch and it's flippin awesome. I installed fluxbox because I prefer a light window manager with lots of functionality. When I used fluxbox with ubuntu I used thunar. But this time around since I'm using arch I want to use a file manager less dependent on less libraries and other share resources. So whats a good functional and maintained file manager that would be good for fluxbox?

Be forewarned that pcmanfm needs an older version of gamin to function properly.

I am now using the latest pcmanfm and gamin and havent had issues in quite some time. Although I must admit that I haven't been connecting my external drive much either, which is when the refresh problems would start for me.

I'm a big fan of Thunar, but the xfce4-panel dependency pushed me towards pcmanfm instead. As for terminal FMs, mc and vifm are both pretty good.

I would second pcmanfm
Apart from that:
ROX
mc
are all ones that are very lightweight.
There is also dmenfm built by an Archer. You can find it in the Community Contributions. It depends on dmenu and is amazing, but its definitely not as feature rich as the others.

There is a Thunar-light package in AUR without the xfce4-panel dependency among others.

You could consider emelfm2.
pretty nifty with functions that include two-click mount, a button to symlink files.
As a newbie to linux, I find it easy enough too..!

I quite like thunar.

Same here - latest pcmanfm and latest gamin, no issues.

Try out Rox filler. I've used it with fluxbox before and its fantastic.

Nope. Only Xfce-specific deps for Thunar 4.6.0 are exo and libxfce4util.

pcmanfm and thunar are probably the lightest file managers that have full functionality... there's a few other out there though. try looking up "lightweight software" in the wiki
For shame! Midnight Commander and Vifm are far lighter (if a little retro), and can damn near do anything.
PCManFM, Thunar, and Rox come to mind for graphical, and as above Midnight Commander and Vifm for non-graphical. There are some GUI file managers similar to the Commanders... GNOME Commander, Krusader (betas for KDE4 available), etc.
Commander-style file managers rule.

about Vifm: I would more recommend vim with VimExplorer-Plugin (http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=22426)
about filemanager: You maybe should try xfe too (http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=8637)

Since I didn't see it here mentioned, why not try Tux Commander? it only depends on gtk2.
I tried both thunar and pcmanfm, uninstalled them and stick with tuxcmd. The only little problem you might come into, is to manually add the buttons to mount cds and usbs (pmount helps here), unless you put them on fstab and they automatically appear there.
Well, just give it a try
$ pacman -S tuxcmd
note: if you ever tried total commander on windows, you'll fit in this one like a glove

You are definitely doing it right. However, the only Xfce-specific deps for building Thunar from source are exo and libxfce4util. No more, no less. And yes, MC is nice and fast. Unfortunately, I have a bad habit of launching two top layer instances of Thunar to perform file operations .

I just checked this out and it's pretty nice. The only thing is that it does everything by file extension and not by mime type, which is counter-intuitive for a Linux desktop IMO.

The FIRST thing I do when I get a basic install of Linux is install Fluxbox and xfe. xfe is a simple light file manager, and doesn't really depend on much except fox. (not gtk or qt afaik)
that's my two cents.

Altho you can put name+extension as 'name'(so you can see the file 'as one'), yes, you'll have to manually had the programs you want to open each file type/extension.
Thanks for spotting that out
