I had a thought about this.
A group of users could start writing PKGBUILDs for the next version of GNOME earlier in the cycle. A lot of the time there won't be huge changes, and they particularly don't change much from beta to final release. We can submit them to AUR as *-devel. Then when it comes around for a dev to package them, he can see changes in dependencies etc and can check package quality (malicious commands etc), instead of having to find out why each package isn't building. Just taking a bit of the work off the devsWe could then try to get GNOME pkgs up on release day like KDE!
just a thought

I hope to see GNOME 2.26 soon in the Arch repo. Would give everything to contribute to a faster release. But my skill is lacking, and I don't have the proper system to test it on.
Want to change to GNOME, since KDE is a bit slow on my old laptop.

2.26 will be in extra soon enough. As JGC mentioned, there's a rather touchy upgrade sitting in testing right now that demands quite a bit of attention. The new X server is making things rather complicated in the Linux world.

noticed that gdm is still stuck at 2.20
JGC, are you still having problems compiling the latest gdm?
I remember you mentioned this with 2.24
Offline
From the latest gdm SVN commit message:
upgpkg: gdm 2.20.10-1
Last 2.20 release, should update to 2.26 soon
Offline
The gdm package needs a rework with the versions later than 2.20.x. As my time is limited at this moment, I decided to just update to 2.20.10 for now.

I gave it a try but decided to downgrade back to 2.24 and wait until it hits extra.
mplayer stopped working and window resizing did not work were some of the quick discoveries I made.
This is no whining - lol.
I am happy the work has bugun.
Good work JGC

Bug report before you go back to 2.24?

Good idea. We used to have that when I wasn't a developer: it was me who made those packages.
Now I'm a dev and maintain mozilla-*, xorg and GNOME. We already have xorg-server 1.6 sitting in testing, which had more priority than getting gnome 2.25.90 in the repositories.
Sometimes I have to make choices. Getting a GNOME beta release packaged was not high priority, users can wait for a week or two.As for pulseaudio: I won't implement it. Adding pulseaudio to gnome-applets and gnome-settings-daemon means that pulseaudio is a forced dependency. If pulse isn't running, you won't have sound or volume control. I compiled gnome-applets with the gstreamer mixer and patched gnome-settings-daemon to use gstreamer instead of pulse for volume control using multimedia keys.
gnome-applets and gnome-settings-daemon are the only two packages concerining the pulse-audio question?
I'd like to know because surely I'll de-patch them myself, as I'm using Pulseaudio for a while and I'm happy with it.
Btw I agree for this decision, in fact many people don't use already PA or they have some (big) problems with it.
I'm also using pulseaudio and i would love to use the new applet. Is it an idea to put the unpatched version of the packages in the AUR?

I don't think so. You can always use ABS to rebuild your packages as you prefer. It shouldn't be hard to edit PKGBUILD and remove some lines.

I think you should give 2 different packages for music, gnome. One with pulse audio and one without.
Archlinux: x86_64, Gnome 2.26.*

When i do pacman -Sy and then pacman -S gnome, i see that my packages are up to date (2.24.3). but ive enabled testing repository. anybody knows solution? im using official yandex russia mirror.

@symx gnome 2.26 is available only for x86_64 right now. have patiece. it will be available soon for i686 also.
if you have x86_64 then maybe that mirror is out of date.

The devs don't have much time as it is and you can't expect JGC to build it if no devs want to use it.
But I'm sure someone (maybe me) will submit one to AUR soon enough

What mirror may have GNOME 2.26? Because I've seen on Archlinux.org page no sight of most of GNOME 2.26 packages, and I do use a x86_64 system.

I also installed gnome-2.26 on my laptop, but as with the stationary, I immediately downgraded back to 2.24, as gnome-2.26 broke netcfg and I had no wifi. Had to wire the laptop to be able to downgrade.
I would have made a bug report, if I had known what caused the brakage of netcfg, but with some hundred of pkgs it is not so easy to figure out which app breaks what.
Having gnome in testing is not so pleasant, as it might pull in other pkgs that you don't need. Although I did 'pacman -Sy gnome gnome-extra --needed'
I am not that happy with gnome-keyring either, not to mention gdm, which I refuse to use. With each new release of gnome more and more work has to be done to undo all the new crazy and unwanted inventions that pop up.
Gnome seems to go toward a development of wanting to take hold of the operating system, breaking everything that is not in compliance with what the gnome developers fancy.
Thumbs down for gnome-2.26, which seems to continue the madness of 2.24.
There has to exist something more configurable than gnome. I am grateful for all suggestions.

@linfan your problems in gnome come because you don't use gdm/kdm as a login manager. gnome-keyring had been annoying but now is been unlock by default. JGC make gnome as good as he can. But if you want to do your way then you should try to fix it. there is no packaging problem and isn't gnome fault that archlinux isn't providing ready and go customization for all the metods that exists in linux for you to login.
keyring problem: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gno … g_on_Login
policykit issues are a lot in this forum. you can search yourself for specific one

oh man, i always thinked that i686 packages are available always first. as i see 64 bit system now starts to have more attention than i686. so i think i will need to switch to 64bit system . anyway thanks for your info.

I am not blaming archlinux - I blame gnome, because of its lack of choice - "Do it our way or fuck off" and "we are ubumpoo gnomers"
sorry, but I am really irritated today, don't take my outbursts personally.

about the pulseaudio thing..
I've tried to recompile gnome-applets and gnome-settings-daemon without the options\patches to enable the gstreamer mixer.. but no way I could obtain the PA panel shown here. (screen from gnome 2.26 release notes)
for now, I'm using gnome-pulse-applet from AUR which is quite good, but I would really to try the GNOME original applet.. If someone can give me some more info, it would be very appreciated. Maybe in another thread, if talking about this in this thread is a little OT...
