Keep getting logged out after su'ing to non-root user from root

I have a headless box that I log into via ssh. Initially while I was setting it up I was logging in as root, but I've now created a new user and will be disabling root login once this problem is solved. What happens exactly is when I log in as root via ssh and then su to another non-root user if I type a letter immediately at the bash prompt (after logging in) it'll add exit to that command and log me out, sending me back to root. The only workaround I've found is to press enter right after logging in as that non-root user to get a new line at the bash prompt and then I can type commands without getting logged out. This problem doesn't happen when su'ing from a non-root user to non-root user or a non-root user to root. Only from root to non-root hmm
