I had to reinstall arch because I screwed up somehow when trying to upgrade the kernel (something about illegal blocks.)
This time, I installed from the ftp rather than the cd, in order to start out with kernel 2.6.28-ARCH. after I installed xorg, and a few other things, and after i used hwd -xa to write an xorg.conf file (also tried my old xorg.conf, but I got the same error), startx returned three errors. it couldn't load the ati or radeon modules, and it couldn't load type1 or record modules. to fix the radeon modules, I installed xf86-video-ati w/ pacman, to fix the others, I commented them out. after I started x (into windowmaker), xterm refused to run. I installed aterm, but it refused to run, as well. I tried reinstalling them, but to no avail.
also i'm getting error "config/hal couldn't initialize context" (didn't notice I was still getting that, since x was actually starting)
any ideas?

Try removing all traces of xorg.conf before you do
hwd -xa
If the file is present, it will simply edit the file and not overwrite it thereby causing headaches.
Also when you installed xorg, did you install the whole package? because if you didn't install xterm from the package, xterm obviously will not start up.

There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !

Please check your /etc/fstab to be sure that the pts filesystem is mounted. Post your fstab here if you aren't sure what that means.
archlinux - please read this and this — twice — then ask questions.

Can you post the solution so that our friends from google can fix their problems too?
