I read a few screensaver issues here, but does anyone have the issue where:

No matter what the timeout, the screensaver starts after 5 minutes, and
the scren NEVER powersaves

I have the same problem, it also happens with xorg-server 1.6 from testing. BTW on my Intel 945GM the graphic performance (checked with glxgears and assaultcube) deteriorates with the new X server. The deterioration is already visible in compiz.
A workaround for the screensaver is to remove gnome-screensaver and install the good old xscreensaver, that works without problems. To have the screensaver preference in the settings menu, just comment the last line in /usr/share/applications/xscreensaver-properties.desktop, i.e. from
NotShowIn=KDE;GNOME;
to
#NotShowIn=KDE;GNOME;

I have a 945GM, and the last xorg-server 1.5.3-5 from extra fixed the problem. Perhaps the 945GME is completely different?

945 GME serie is used in netbooks with intel Atom processor. I think that Atoms are more suceptibles to this bug, maybe because their lower performance, no?

Why empathy is not part of gnome? It is stuck in testing. Is this another gdm-related problem?

i upgraded today to gnome 2.26, never using the testing repository.

I have the same problem. 50-100% usage by xorg   :-/

Any suggestions?

What video driver for xorg are you using? Try with a clean gnome config (add a new user, log into gnome with that user, if all is fine then you know that your gnome configs are off). Did you get the new xorg update?

Update the xorg server to the last bugfix version. It should fix it, and if it doesn't, try a new user configuration.

I had made a

pacman -Suy

so anything should up to date.
use the xf86-video-intel driver ... for gm965

i'm not using compiz.

i'm not created a new user but deleted every config for gnome and similar programs in my user directory

nothing helped yet.

before the upgrade, everything worked fine (yesterday ^^)

is there anything i could test or help?

You could try the latest xorg from [testing]. That fixes this problem for me.
Also, for those of you who are experiencing the problem of too many file manager
windows opening at login, that can be fixed by doing this:

gconftool-2 -t bool -s /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop true

is it just me, or when i change theme in gnome appearance everything changes, but metacity theme not and i have to manually change theme? i found this happens only when compiz is turned on, maybe its a problem with compiz-gtk-decorator? but in gnome 2.24 everything was fine

Yup, I noticed the same problem when changing themes with compiz turned on. I have to switch to metacity temporarily, change the theme, then switch back to compiz in order for the new theme to take effect.

ok so i have created a test user ... it's still the same .. 98-100% cpu usage by xorg
:-/

if i upgrade to xserver 1.6 from testing repository ... do i get any problems later?
or could be there a fix the next days for stable repository?

Hi,
I'm quite new to Arch and I was wondering if it is  save to  upgrade my gnome 2.24 to gnome 2.26 using pacman -Syu ? What I mean is, that I have been reading this thread, and I see that there are some issures with gnome 2.26 in arch for now. Therfore, I don't know if I should wait with the upgrade, until it will work for sure, or I should just perform the upgrade and pray that everything (e.g. combiz)  will work after the upgrade:-)?

I hit this bug when I upgraded to Gnome 2.26. Installing xorg-server 1.6 from testing fixed it for me; I didn't had to create a new user. I am using the nvidia drivers.

The bug that's bothering me since a few versions ago (I don't remember exactly when) it's when Nautilus stops picking up file changes after a random amount of time. I tried replacing FAM with gamin and I didn't notice any changes. Anyone else has this?

you are right ...
upgrade to the testing xorg-server, xf86-video, xf86-input fixes the 100% issue ..

this means ... there is really a bug ;-)

Just wanted to add here the things that I've noticed breaking with the new Gnome update:
root terminal does not work. No output if launched from the console, so no idea what could be the culprit. (Someone else has had this problem and mentioned it on this thread too).
Nautilus-open-terminal extension just disappeared. Tried to reinstall it with pacman, but no luck there either.
I booted once and Gnome just kept opening new instances of nautilus. I could move the mouse around, but the CPU was so clogged that not even Ctrl+Alt+Bksp would kill X. Alt+Ctrl+SysReq REISUB didn't work either. A herd reset solved the issue and it didn't happen again since that time.

Having said that, I just wanted to add that I am absolutely loving Arch!

the reason for this is that gnome 2.26 is almost identical to 2.24.
I'm a little disappointed that gnome is doing so little. I'd rather a huge change like KDE, even with the downsides, but I honestly haven't noticed any difference (I've read the changelog, but none of it improves my computing life)

Hi there,

I recently switched to KDE and I like it a lot. Now Gnome 2.26 comes with some features I've been always seeking. The upnp/dlna functionality is absolutely amazing - still, not very well implemented, but it's a start. However, I have only tested it with Ubuntu 9.04 Remix beta, so can't tell for sure if it is gnome's fault. I use Mediatomb to serve media to my PS3, and I've been looking for ages to implement this functionality to my pcs and laptops. Anyway, I am sure now the coherence framework can be easily implemented by any other media player, so I am waiting to see it in amarok.

Importing outlook data files directly in evolution is another very cool feature. This and syncevolution (for syncing to PIM servers, like Funambol) offer a seamless pim client. I just hope a plugin for syncing with funambol will be made available for kde as well.

IMHO, the huge downside of Gnome is that it looks somehow obsolete, at least when compared to KDE which looks ages ahead. Gnome 3 looks very promising though. Maybe the gnome devs are giving priority to gnome3 and just refining gnome2 (which is not bad at all). Anyways, take a look at some screenshots of gnome3, it looks really nice:

back on topic: updating gnome 2.26 worked quite well. but as others have mentioned, somehow the timeouts set in power-manager are ignored and the display doesn't turn off anymore...

updating gnome-power-manager to 2.26.0 doesn't fix these issues.

updated to the latest stable gnome and no issues at all. I like the little modifications they made. especially the volume bar etc.. looks alot nicer.

here's an issue that I have after upgrading to 2.26:

Nautilus and Brasero--that CD/DVD burn application--seem to be thrown together, that is, whenever I start a Nautilus browser, both Gnome-Do's Docky and the GNOME-globalmenu "thinks" that it is Brasero. Docky shows Brasero's icon, and GNOME-globalmenu claims the title to be "Brasero [...]". Does anyone else experience this? Though nothing is broken, it surely is a weird bug.

I've reinstalled Archlinux recently, and I remember that I first installed GNOME 2.24 because the new one wasn't available yet, and some days later, I've upgraded to 2.26. I wonder if this might be the reason?

Thanks for broken my system. I installed xorg 1.6 and keyboard and mouse dont work anymore. I have hal running in the system.

C'mon now. It isn't fair to blame Archlinux and its devs for bugs that are inherited from [gnome] packages - the upstream bugs. Although it would render some peace of mind if Archlinux waited for severe upstreams bug to be fixed by the software devs before releasing it to the repos, it is not realistic and I know this discussion isn't new and, like it or not, bleeding edge is bleeding edge. Until now, all packages from the Arch devs have been very kind to me and my system!
My mistake with the infamous 100% CPU-usage bug was that I simply jumped on every possible solution out there to remedy the problem and in the end it broke my system. I had to reinstall Archlinux on my main PC system, which I didn't mind much since it became cluttered and slow after a year of use. Most people however stayed cool and simply waited for a patch that became almost readily available.

Lessons learned -
1) Stay cool when things don't turn out well after a pacman -Syu
2) Keep an alternative DE handy. (I'm using xfce for now and I almost forgot how fast and neat it was!) :-)
On my laptop, I run gnome 2.24 and xfce.
3) Don't blame the devs
