Re: wmii borders

I know this doesn't answer your question per se.

But if you don't want borders, might I suggest alternative WMs like musca or dwm or ratpoison -- all of which have just a 1 px border. There might be other WMs that do it too. I am not sure.

I used scrotwm...although honestly I didn't give it too much of a whirl. I had to really struggle with the documentation. It was not as readily available. Same with dwm and wmii, unfortunately. I tend to like a 1px border better than the borders that wmii gives. But one wmii feature that i considered was amazing was the fact that it auto-removed the tags which didnt have any windows in them. I also loved the stacking mode of wmii.

I am using musca currently and am loving it. I think I am now at a position where I have selected my tiling wm and my floating wm for good. Although, if something better comes out, I will surely try it out.

About Ratpoison: No one stopping you from rearanging your keyboard bindings smile. You can set all you need without the need of C-t

In wmii you could set the same color value for selected and unselected bg/fg colors. You'll be left with some nasty gaps of that color though.

Scrotwm is cool but I just found today that it has a bug regarding "floaters". Floating windows are designed to be always on top..which is logical but they didn't take into consideration that you might have more than one floating window. You can open 1-2-3 floating windows but you can't restack them ( bring one in front of the other by MOD + clicking it ).
Other than that I use it ( ScrotWM ) as my second wm just to give it a shot (using Ratpoison as main)

Check my config for any ideas.
Basically if let's say you want ratpoison to resize a frame. You normally have to enter resize mode using the C-t combo, then use arrows to resize, then press Return.
With my config you just hold ALT (M) and use the arrows..
You can define any function like this. All I use C-t combos for is to switching windows.

What I said had nothing to do with the borders..it was a reply to your post about the "having to press the C-t combo". Sorry for not beeing more helpful

You will have to explain what exactly DOESN'T work.
With my config you should be able to resize the frame using alt + directional keys, alt + m to spawn dmenu..and a bunch of other stuff
no ctrl + t needed.
I only use ctrl + t to select windows and to maximize..
What exactly do you want to use without C-t ?

The alt key is also called the "Meta" key. In my config you will see this:

"definekey top M-Right resize 20 0"

That mean we define the key in the top keymap (doesn't need the C-t combo, you press the combination directly).
The key is M-Right which can also be read as Meta + Right Arrow Key (Alt + Right Arrow Key). After that it's preety simple...what command does it run (in my config it increases the horizontal size of the frame by 20 pixels)

Re: wmii borders

oh i see now, thank you so much, so basiclly i can re-write all the keybindings to use alt? is there anyway to set a keybinding with alt to execute an app, like firefox

my only guess would be 'definekey M-f exec firefox'

Your guess would be correct smile
As you see in my config I have alt + shift + Enter for excuting urxvt (I got used to that binding..using it in all the tilers), and alt + m to run dmenu (so I ca run any application)

edit: scratch that. put a top in there also. definekey needs the keymap name too so

definekey top M-f exec firefox
