very instable wifi connection with the rt61pci driver

Hi.

I'm having a lot of troubles with the rt61pci driver from kernel 2.6.29. Sometimes the connection is pretty stable around 300k/s, sometimes it drops down to 10k/s  or even completely stall - while my laptop's connection on the same AP works perfectly.

I don't know if it means anything, but minutes ago I saw the bit rate displayed by iwconfig dropping from 54Mb/s to 48, then 36, down to 1Mbs.

I'm not sure where to look, but at least dmesg seems to be giving a lot of weird messages related to wlan0 :

$ dmesg | grep wlan0

Re: very instable wifi connection with the rt61pci driver

Damn. I'm suffering the very same symptoms on my machine. According to serialmonkey site, they're putting down the legacy drivers from the codebase.
I tryied to compile the drivers from ralink, but I didn't success. So I'm stalled until someone finds a proper solution sad

They say that if you play a Win cd backward you hear satanic messages. That's nothing! 'cause if you play it forwards, it installs windows.

Unfortunately, this works sometimes. I've running a WPA2 router running over here and my card likes to freeze my entire PC when trying to reset the hardware using iwpriv.

Re: very instable wifi connection with the rt61pci driver

I'm having exactly the same problem using rt73usb. My connection to my wireless router sometimes gets very slow. To setup my wlan connection I use wicd. Has anybody tried the forums at the serialmonkey site ? My rt73usb used to be VERY stable using kernel 2.6.28 and below. Starting with 2.6.29 things started to go less fast. I think it has to do with a kernel drive update for this hardware. That's why I ask about the serialmonkey site.

Re: very instable wifi connection with the rt61pci driver

Hello,

I had exactly the same problem since the kernel 2.6.29 with a very unstable connexion.
I'm using the rt2x00-rt61-fw 1.2-3 driver on my RaLink RT2561/RT61.

I was using wicd/wicd-client, and every time I set the connexion with the GUI interface, the connexion was very unstable, with about every conflict describe here.
The strange thing is, since I'm using command line to connect, my connexion is fine.
(just with "iwconfig wlan0 ap 00:01:23:45:67:89 essid "Yourbox" key 0123456789123456789" followed by "dhcpcd…")

So in my case, the isue came from wicd or wicd-client and not from the driver.

(sorry for my english…)

Re: very instable wifi connection with the rt61pci driver

I am having similar issues with rt73usb.  The connection is fine once power management is disabled for the interface, but the connection is never established after machine suspend/resume.  My logs look similar to the original poster ones.

Re: very instable wifi connection with the rt61pci driver

New to the forum, hopefully using tags correctly..!

I found this thread in a google search for the "deauthenticating (reason=3)" issue that I've only experienced in the last few bleeding-edge distros I've installed, of which I can specifically recall antiX 8.5 and my Arch net-install from last night. I'm back in Windows for the moment but am particularly pleased with the outcome of my customization of Arch--I'd always given up midway with previous releases, but here I have the ideal dual-boot config (old lady hates anything that isn't Windows) and I'm rather annoyed at this one little hiccup. And for my needs, there is no falling back on wl or ndiswrapper.

My only machine right now is this HP Compaq nx6110, 910GM (GMA 900), 512MiB, 40GiB, DVDRW. The integrated 10/100 NIC is a Broadcom 440x [14e4:170c rev 02] as shown in the "b44" reference above. In a manual configuration, I put this interface down, but as configured with Wicd, it remains active despite no connection. The WLAN interface is a Broadcom BCM4306 [14e4:4320 rev 03] installed in the mini-PCI slot underneath, driven by both the b43 module included with 2.6.33-ARCH and the 4.178.10.4 firmware from openwrt.org as directed. I am connected to my AP with WEP encryption and an average signal of 93% (~-49dBm). I know this thread concerns rt61 devices (one of which I used to own--the MSI PC60G + 8dBi antenna) but clearly the problem isn't limited to them, as no matter my network configuration, I am watching my WLAN drop after 20 to 30 seconds of idle--it'll reconnect eventually if Wicd is running. I understand I may be missing something specific to Broadcom such as an update or another thread directing me to downgrade. If anyone knows something I don't, please do share. I have an otherwise permanent installation on my hands!

Will gladly go back into Arch to paste output from debug commands if deemed helpful.
