Re: my new install freezes as soon as x starts

so if you aren't using hot plugging, you will need the corresponding entries in xorg.conf to enable the keyboard and the mouse. Xorg 1.6 does not create all the entries in xorg. so you will have to add them in.

For others, who simply use hot plugging, the entries in xorg.conf are ignored...so since 1.6 xorg  xorg.conf is almost empty for all users.

I am not sure which bug you are referring to, but hot plugging works for me. The only thing I have in my xorg.conf is an entry for using nvidia drivers

a while ago there was a bug relating to hot plug, that would cause the keyboard and mouse to become unresponsive in X which is why i mentioned that i had manualy disabled it .

Re: my new install freezes as soon as x starts

I had similar issues.

In my case, it was caused by the recent kernel 2.6.29, combined with the (patched) broadcom module for my wireless card.
I had to downgrade to 2.6.28 and to an older broadcom card.

Do you have a broadcom card?

Even if not, try downgrading the kernel and see how it goes
