Arch dedicated server host

I'm not sure if a VPS (virtual private server) fits that bill too - or do you really want a system completely to yourself?

If a VPS is an option, Slicehost offers Arch as an option. The images aren't trimmed though - and that kinda irritates me, for a static thing such as an image it's not a big deal to take out stuff you won't run on a server (some graphical libs e.g.) that the default install comes with. Other than that, Slicehost is pretty cool .

VPS - Linode have served me well (and cheaper than Slicehost )

As far as dedicated goes -- where's Arch hosted?

There's indeed an Arch server hosted at SevenL, but I think the main server (gerolde) isn't. Does anyone know where it is, by the way?
As for me, I've used Slicehost for more than a year now, and I'm very happy with it.

I've used slicehost before. They're alright, but I still get 50% more bandwidth at linode, not for the same price, but for less, and I haven't experienced any drop in quality of service. Stability seems a bit better, actually. =P

Comparing the base Slicehost against the base Linode:
Slicehost = 256mb RAM, 10gb disk, 100gb bandwidth (US$20)
Linode = 380mb RAM, 12gb disk, 200gb bandwidth (US$19.95)

the only problem i had with slicehost was the fact that they *only* offer 64bit arch instances. the ram overhead of 64bit with a 256mb ram allocation is significant. I moved to a 32bit host, and effectively had 2x the headroom for ram.

With that little amount of memory, 64bit offers diminishing returns. It makes sense on the slices with lots of memory, but not on the tiny ones. Some folks ran apps inside a 32bit chroot, but that seemed a bit masturbatory to me (not to mention used up significant amounts of disk space).

Fukawi2: I checked, yes, it's 360 MB RAM though. But they effectively double the bandwidth for the same price more or less, and give you 20% more disk space for their basic plan. I am seriously considering backing up everything and moving my stuff .

I already thought it was kind of consuming a lot out of the box, without any web servers, databases, etc. running. Never suspected the 64 bit overhead was gonna be that big though...

I wonder what you people do with your VPS.

Do you build a web/ftp server from scratch and so on? Or whatever ?

Can you describe the advantages you get from it, so I get some ideas ?

Building a web/ftp/mail server from scratch is the first thing I do. Advantages would be having complete control of your own server and the ability to do what you want with it. That and the whole "learning" thing...

I used to have shared hosting too, but now I have 2 VPS's - one running a Web and DNS Server, and another running as a Mail and Personal IRC Server.

With the shared hosting, there were just some little things that bugged me that I couldn't do that I wanted to, or was being forced to do when I didn't want to. Having the VPS gives me complete control to do anything I like. It also (mostly) makes me responsible for the uptime and availability, so I can't blame anyone else
