wlan0 perpetually not associated despite manually setting mac address

Wireless was working fine until a little while ago...

Now when I use (as root)  iwconfig to set the ap's essid and mac address, the essid sets just fine, but every time the AP says not-associated where it should have the mac address I just told it to use.  What could be going wrong?  Why am I being ignored by my wireless interface?

A newly arisen problem, and a very frustrating one.  sad

Maybe I'm missing something here.

Perhaps use a graphical option like Wicd?

No, but the network was not encrypted...

Strangely enough, this happened on a business trip (I couldn't connect to the hotel WiFi or any neighboring networks) but now that I'm home it connects fine to my home network...  hmm

(Thank god for business centers with free internet)
