I'm using openbox, and with use of keybindings, a panel isn't necessary, I'd rather just have the extra screen space at this point (unless someone has a great reason for using a panel).
I added stalonetray for pidgin and wireless network configuration notifications. Is there any way to add a clock to display here?
Also, I was looking for an "expose" like function. In gnome I used compiz for it, I installed skippy but there is a delay. I.e. when I hit F11 it opens up right away but it will show, say, the home page of firefox rather than the page I'm currently on. Anyone know why?

No idea what an 'expose' function does, but for the clock you could always use conky, and fit it right after your stalonetray

Well, I'm looking for something that will display all open programs so that I can choose the one i'm looking for (in case its minizimed or behind my open window). Possibly, without use of a panel. Expose is the mac feature that shows a thumbnail of all open programs.

In openbox middle click does that by default
edit: although, of course, it can be bound to anything

Well, stalone tray is visible over programs that maximize the entire screen, can conky show up on the tray over the maximized program, too?

Yes, you can make conky be on top.

How is that done?

Check the conky config options on their website, it may be own_window_type or own_window_hints
Offline
Add to .conkyrc
own_window_hints above
Or with other values as well, for example
own_window_hints undecorated,above,sticky,skip_taskbar,skip_pager

Thanks - but even so, it's still hidden by, say, firefox

Just tried - it's not. Maybe you have it set to be on top in Openbox settings?

What I normally do is leave a margin of say 16 px and have a 1 line conky that displays the time/date uptime, cpu usage mem, swap eth0 link updates and Weather
For a clock, if you don't want to use Conky, you can also install lal. Its a very basic app that just shows you the clock and it aligns to where ever you have your systray running.
Here's a screenshot of my musca setup --- I use the same conky and systray config in openbox as well. I was just to lazy too go in openbox and get the screenshot
In openbox, you just won't have the windows tiled as I do in the shot.

There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !

I prefer to have conky or a panel on the top side, it's more visible that way for me...
BTW that's a nice screenshot, I may need to try out this musca thingy

What do you guys use to switch around programs?
EDIT: Can you possibly post the conky config, just so I can see how to display it that small in that portion of the screen?

its just the x and y offset in the conky config, but he added a margin in openbox to fit it. I don't think that's what you want though, since you said you wanted to get all the screen real-estate you can, setting a margin is basically making a panel

Alt+Tab to move between windows on the same desktop and Super+Tab to move between windows across desktops

Would someone really miss 10-16px at the top or bottom? In any case, I don't care that much about screen real estate. I like to scroll less, sure, but I am not going to cry over 10 px. The main reason to see conky all the time is to be able to see the time. I didn't want to have to minimize all windows to see the time or use any other app for it.

Right, it doesn't bother me either, but I'm referring to the OP.

Here's a great reason to have a panel: I use Pidgin and a few chat programs and without a panel I get no notification that there's activity in those windows. Cycling through every so often just to check is a major pain.
Here's another: I have a conky that I want visible at all times, so I might as well toss a panel up there, too.
And in the midst of such perfection,
I can't help but feel diseased.

If you want a pretty clock on the bottom, I like cairo-clock with the Arch theme

You are confusing a panel with a system tray. They are two very different things. Notifications mostly occur in systrays

On a side note: Pidgin has a libnotify plugin

Okay, so, who uses a panel, who uses conky, who uses both? Pros/Cons of each setup?

I don't understand what you mean by "who uses a panel" etc. Its just a choice. you can if you want to ...or NOT.
Not using a panel - gives you more screen real estate, if you need it. Allows you to use the keyboard more since you have to Alt+Tab or Super+Tab, instead of the mouse.
Panels allow switching via the mouse.

Actually, I think that the app that is being requested would be visiblity (the package in pacman is visiblity-git).
I have conky that shows the clock and stuff, yes.
I also have stalonetray for the pidgin icon, and I have visibility as well, which shows icons for what apps are running and focus/minimization as well.
In the past, I have actually indirectly integrated stalonetray into my conky config.
The only other thing that I can think of is to start stalonetray withdrawn so that it goes into openbox's dock, and then use one of the many dockable clocks out there. That way you'll have more what you are looking for.

Panels are mostly valuable for information. Like the current time, battery state (if you're using a laptop) and that sort of thing.
