[SOLVED]CLI browser search

I was not sure if this would go in linux discussion or here...so mods, please feel free to move it.

I am looking for a CLI browser that could fit certain needs:

1)Have some basic mouse support. I do not want a browser that says - go figure it out or just sit there staring at the homepage I am showing you, and finally hit exit in disgust. I want to be able to use the mouse to click on links (at least initially) without having to tab a million times

I know CLI browsers are supposed to take you away from the mouse, but I am new to this..so I want it to ease me into it.

2) Use some graphics imaging. -- I am definitely not asking for Flash or Java support. But it should be able to render the images and logos of websites cleanly. If I ever go on a search to find the next best You Tube video, I will use firefox or something else, but If all I want to do is log into the forums and see the threads or read some articles on newspaper websites, I would like to use the CLI browser which would help with not getting all the gazillion blinking/flashing ads around the periphery.

Now, before you go off telling me to lmgtfy...I have researched some browsers like
1) links 2) lynx 3) w3m 4) elinks.

What I am asking is, can they support the above 2 requirements. Which one is better (I know this is subjective)? If you have used any of the above (or even ones that are not listed for that matter), could you tell me your opinion on it?

Thanks,

Re: [SOLVED]CLI browser search

I would recommend Links in graphical mode(links-g) with gpm, if you are using framebuffer.  It has basic mouse support and displays images.

Re: [SOLVED]CLI browser search

Second vote for links2 -g (whick afaik is the only cli browser that can do what you want...)

Re: [SOLVED]CLI browser search

Agreed with links-g. Only if 1680x1050 fb started working again on my computer.

Re: [SOLVED]CLI browser search

elinks has mouse support and it can auto open images in an external viewer by just clicking them (IIRC)

I like the feel of elinks, feels like the firefox of cli browsers.

Actually I meant just being able to render the image correctly in the CLI itself (like the site logo etc.). But if it does open images as well in an external program, it could be useful for when my family sends me 10 pics attached to the same email !!! wink

Re: [SOLVED]CLI browser search

I was checking out links-g at this site http://links.twibright.com/features.php

and it seems there are two distinct modes  graphics and text. So, no images will be rendered in text mode? I haven't tried them out yet because I still am at work..

Will try them all out tonight

Re: [SOLVED]CLI browser search

I am currently trying out links-g...and it works well, but I can only see the text. How would I enable the graphics mode?

Yeah..never mind I just got it. Since links and links-g were two different packages in the repos. I thought if I install links-g, it would automatically start in graphics mode.

so when I install links-g, does it also install links?

No, links-g is just a seperate package with graphics mode enabled for links. You have to run links -g always to take advantage of it.

Re: [SOLVED]CLI browser search

does links-g support re-direction? After posting on the forums here, it normally says, "post submitted...redirecting you to ...." but when I use links -g, it just sits there at that page and never re-directs. I have to go back and then get into the appropriate forum again.

Re: [SOLVED]CLI browser search

Within the interface, click on the gray bar on top, go to View and click 'Html options' then check 'Auto refresh' then save it by clicking 'Save html options' so you don't have to repeat it over again after you close it.

Re: [SOLVED]CLI browser search

There is also something called Twin that gives you an ascii art desktop and you can use your mouse with it. I almost cried when I found out it wasn't in the repos. Hmm might be I can't remember.

Thanks.

I didn't know about twin either. Will check it out.

I am currently using links-g and liking it so far.

Re: [SOLVED]CLI browser search

i read somewhere i don't remember (and can't find it now) that says that one can watch for example youtube videos using links -g and mplayer, it was like an automated "save video to disk and play with mplayer" thing, I WANT IT, lol, so if someone knows how to do that please share smile im sick of firefox and its choppiness and high cpu usage.

And im looking for a way to replace google reader for rss, because i cant open it in links -g, what are you guys using? i want a lightweight google reader alternative that opens in links -g or that can display images like links -g

and lastly... my search for a light browser will end if i can use the elinks "tabs" in links -g, is there a way to achieve this?

What does a youtube video download tool do? Is the flv location in the html page?
