slirp - slow ?

i'm tethering my iphone "to" my laptop on an ad hoc wifi network and a socks proxy and everything work fine, speeds are great. Problem with this technique is you have to have proxy support in the application and you have to set it up every time.

so i found another method from googling, using slirp. Now, with using slirp i can get a connection through the ppp0 interface and everything seems to be 'ok' except for some reason speeds are much slower and dns lookups are erratic and slow (sometimes up to a minute or more) ...

funny thing is, using tools such as 'dig' or 'nslookup' resolves the names in a matter of milliseconds ... its only happening inside application such as firefox or irc clients or pacman or what not ...

any ideas ? is this a normal thing with using slirp ? google has very little information about it .. im thinking this can't be right..
