Insanity and Remote Desktop

This is a crazy question, and you're welcome to just tell me I'm an idiot. But at least say it, don't just think it.

Anyway, my friend recently bought a laptop with a nice screen and everything, but it's low end, and it has integrated graphics. He has a high end desktop with a good graphics card and everything, and he's wondering if there's any good way for him to use the laptop as a keyboard, mouse, and monitor for the desktop if he wanted to take them both somewhere and play games or something.
Remote desktop would work, but most solutions wouldn't take advantage of hardware accelerated graphics. I think certain VNC servers can use hardware graphics, but would performance be good? Is there a simple way to directly connect everything? The X clients on the desktop could use the X server on the laptop, but that wouldn't take advantage of hardware rendering either, if I remember correctly.
This is pretty much speculation right now, kind of a "wouldn't it be cool if..." type idea.
