Huh. The version 2 driver, much like my experience with the kernel driver, cannot connect to open networks. This makes no sense to me. How can it get connecting to WPA but not get connecting with no encryption?

Weird, because all that works flawless here. I have to admit though, I am using wpa_supplicant directly. There are some directions in this thread earlier, where I posted my config. The problem with wicd and networkmanager is that you cannot set certain flags manually...at least, not that I know of.

I can't imagine what special flags I'd want to fiddle with to connect to an open, managed network, all though I suppose using command-line tools to connect might at least give me some output and give me a clue what the problem is. Any idea on approximately what page of this thread your directions are?

Is anybody interested in the older rt28600sta driver like the good old v1.7.1.1? I can try to compile that with my zen-kernnel. I was trying the newer driver (v2.1.1.0) and found that it is a pain. It compiles fine, but iwconfig fails to set the ssid.

Hi,

there seems to be some problem with the w-lan driver. I am using your (zodmaner) kernel pkg. I am somehow not able to change the MAC of the wireless adapter, i first shut it down (ifconfig ra0 down), then i changed the MAC address (ifconfig ra0 hw ether xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx). An "ifconfig ra0" while the card is still shut down would now give me the correct new MAC address, but if i now put the card up again, the MAC changes again to the original one. Is this caused by the firmware of the w-lan hardware, or is it a problem with the driver or am i doing anything wrong? Trying to change the MAC while the card is still up to avoid the "ifconfig ra0 up" command does not work, of course.

Any hints?

I've been able to change the mac on rt2860sta by loading the module like this:

modprobe rt2860sta mac=xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx

I just had a look at the kernel 2.6.29 rt2860 driver. It seems to be the 1.8.0.0 driver from Ralink. I took a look at the gregkh-staging-patch as well. Gregkh has put in the EEEPC_SPECIAL_SETTING, but the ubuntu patch from https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/339891 is missing. Also missing is the patch for rt_linux.h from v1.7.1.1_EEEPC driver. Hence, I put together a kernel patch which includes EEEPC_SPECIAL_SETTING, ubuntu patch and rt_linux.h patch and updated my zen-eee901 kernel. The driver seems to be working fine for me with wicd, although automatic connection may not work because of the bogus assigning of essid issue. If you are interested, check out the new zen-eee kernel. Let me know how this patch works.

The driver has been built as a module, so you need to include rt2860sta in the MODULES line of /etc/rc.conf for it to load.

I just installed the newest Arch kernel package, 2.6.29.4-1, which overwrote my compiled module for Ralink, and now it connects to open networks. I wonder if it will connect to WPA networks too, or am I going to have to switch wireless modules whenever I switch wireless networks?

I just install archlinux on eeepc 901 with Stock kernel.
I have a problem with suspend/resume
It appears to suspend ok, however when resuming the system reboots.
And i noticed that my sound clicks before the reboot.

I have acpi-eeepc-generic installed from AUR.

I'm using a 1000H and suffered from the same problem, the ACPI sleep button was registered twice and so the system suspend again right after resuming, Kernel 2.6.30 fixed this for me, along with great intel-2.8.0+KMS+UXA performance.

However, I still have the random static noise issue mentioned much earlier:

I'm having a very strange sound issue, it has been happening for a while and nothing I have done so far has helped.

Seemingly randomly, I will get a significant amount of static through the speakers and headphones when something opens the card, this continues until whatever was playing releases the card, volume control has no effect on it.

The only solution seems to be muting everything by muting the iSpeaker channel. The noise becomes quieter if I mute the Beep channel though, but it's still annoying.

Did anyone ever find a solution?

I remember having similar issue on a completely different system: a desktop without speakers.

The problem was that sound was routed not to the speakers/lineout/hearphones output but to the pcspkr module (or the other one, probably the other one) which uses the internal speaker for sound.

Now I don't know if the eee has an internal speaker, maybe not, but that's a lead... The module pcspkr and the similar alsa module is a pain when it steals your sound.

Do you ear what you are playing or is it just the static?

Yes, if the static noise appears I can still hear the normal output, although in bad quality and the noise is much louder. The problem appears randomly and disappears if I reboot or s2disk.
Well, the EEE doesn't have one of those old 4-pin beepers, the two internal speakers are used as normal speakers connected to the sound chip. ALSA does have a "Beep" channel that is responsible for using the normal speakers to produce a Beep if something like a terminal requests a bell. This channel may be related though as muting it makes the static noise a bit quieter.
I compiled everything in statically, I'll recompile my kernel and see if I included this module and leave it out.

Update: Compiled the kernel with CONFIG_PCSPKR_PLATFORM not being set. I also booted the standard Arch kernel with pcspkr blacklisted. Same result: The "Beep" channel is still there, as is the static. I'm glad I don't need sound that much. It stars within 10 minutes and is only stopped by a cold boot.
Update2: I also tried deactivating CONFIG_SND_HDA_INPUT_BEEP. The mysterious "Beep" channel stays, there are no beeps anymore though. But the static noise stays.

hi there!

I'm a newbie in arch world.. I used to be a ubuntu and gentoo user (I abandoned this one for a time because I had some trouble and didn't have much time to solve stuff.. but guess what.. HOLIDAYS:D)

now I'm trying to setup Arch in a 1000h... the instalation was easy (specially compared to gentoo),
but now I can't get wifi to work.

With the stock kernel I have ethernet.. with the kernel-eee I dont have neither wireless or ethernet...

I've searched a lot and tryed a lot of things but I can't get it to work..
can somebody give me some steps?

(what modules to load.. what packages to install.. what kernel to use.. etc)

I already have now ra0!:D wicd can now see wireless connections but I dont know why but i cant connect to mine (its wpa2 personal).

is personal the same thing as passphrase?

do I have to to something to get wicd connecting?

Hi!
The archkernel now supports everything in eee 901, so you dont need the zen kernel  (the reposityory is not avail anymore afaik)
So, just run the standard kernel and you have a go!

Hello,

I have an Eeepc 901. I use stock kernel.
I have a problem, I think with eeepc_laptop.
If I load this module in rc.local file, screen became blank just before login prompt and Eeepc is totaly unusable.
If I load this module in rc.conf, the boot work fine and I can enter login and pass, everything work fine.
In the two situation I have sometimes an problem when I start my laptop: It won't start, I have nor bios display, nor grub. I need to unplug ac-adapter and battery, and waiting a long time.

Somebody has same problem? What is the solution for avoiding this two problems?

I blacklist eeepc_laptop in rc.conf and load in the background from rc.local and it works fine for me (stock kernel): my rc.local looks like this:

modprobe eeepc_laptop &

When I've installed Archlinux on my Eeepc, I have made exactly the same thing.
But I have a problem with this solution, the screen become blank at the boot end and I have no other solution than stop with pressing on power button.
This is why I load eeepc_laptop in rc.conf file.
Could you send me the complete lsmod result, perhaps I've a conflict with an other module?

your lsmod didn't show acpi-cpufreq. It's normal?
On the wiki page, MODULES contain acpi-cpufreq.
My lsmod seem not different than your.
