Wireless, N1 driver (aka N+)

hello peeps,

OK i have a wireless USB N1 stick, how ever Arch (using NetworkManager) is only picking it up at 54mbs insted of 300+mbs.

I have tryed to setup NDISWrapper to load the driver, now NDISWrapper is set to load in rc.conf and the driver is installed and showing as so. However NDIS dose not get used for this USB stick, insted it loads a driver called 'USB'

can anyone help me out with this?

thanks

Re: Wireless, N1 driver (aka N+)

be aware that most wireless drivers on linux do not yet report the correct connection bitrate, even though it is actually connecting at 300 it will still report 54.

the best way to test is copying/downloading something instead of looking at the bitrate..

Re: Wireless, N1 driver (aka N+)

thanks litemotiv, That was sort of in the back of my mind, never thought of testing it tho yikes

I did find tho, that the vista 32 driver i was trying to load was failing with ndis on boot, so iv just loaded the xp 32 driver to see if it was any diffrent.

What i'll do is reboot with ndis and see what it picks up.

If the linux 'USB' driver gets detected then i'll test the speed over the lan and then see whats what.

Thanks

OK NDISWrapper is now loading but only getting 130mb, and thats true going off lan transfers as well.

Time to start looking into the vista driver i think

Re: Wireless, N1 driver (aka N+)

another thing to mention is that if you have a mixed B/G/N router or an N-router on 2.4ghz, chances are it will only use 130mbit as a maximum to avoid radio interference (this is called "neighbour friendly" mode). to actually achieve full 300mbit+ speeds you most probably need a dedicated 5ghz channel for N-connections.

Re: Wireless, N1 driver (aka N+)

yes i have a mixed router, but its dual band and setup to use 2.4 and 5 so it would all depend on the client what it would pick.

Cant test again at the moment but i'll do a bit more playing around with it tomorrow
