Where is it? pacman -Ss empathy shows nothing. It's a part of gnome, why can't it be apart of the repositories with gnome?
Offline
It's available in the AUR:
http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=19779
Can't tell you why it's not in the repository though

Why don't you file a bug report?

I, too was wondering this the other day when "pacman -Ss empathy" turned out blank.
The day Microsoft makes a product that doesn't suck, is the day they make a vacuum cleaner.

But if they tell you that I've lost my mind, maybe it's not gone just a little hard to find...

Because it is not a bug...
A really old version had been sitting in [testing] for ages, but due to lack of time never got fully packaged. It was removed and now a TU may put it in [community].

well,i don't see a reason for having empathy in the repos, other than being a part of gnome
pidgin suits me just fine really

Hello fellow .
I'm thankful you're not a dev/TU .
English is not my native language .

because some users like to be able to choose...;)
I hope the situation will change for gnome 2.28...

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Gimme an Empathy that doesn't depend on GNOME and I'll be happy.
This "choice" BS only goes so far considering Empathy is tied to GNOME, Kopete to KDE. Leaves me with no real options.
And in the midst of such perfection,
I can't help but feel diseased.

... it's for the gnome desktop.
you'll need libraries for some apps, it's the way it is. Consider the alternative *shudders*

But that's just it. It's TIED to GNOME. You can install Epiphany without needing, say, the gnome-keyring and all the others. I'm a lightweight user and needing a whole bucket of GNOME stuff just for one application is crazy. Few other apps have that problem, especially in a field that needs alternatives as desperately as IM clients.

i think is better to compile telepathy-mission-control with gnome-keyring support for better security(gnome-keyring or other type is a feature request for pidgin too). i don't know what method of storing password will use if i --enable-keyring=no. better is to compile yourself an upload to aur as telepathy-mission-control-nognome or something

That'd be cool.
Actually, I spent an hour yesterday just trying to get it to work, no go. After repeated "network failures" on every single protocol, finally it managed to connect to AIM but then said every single one of my contacts was offline. Awesome.
I wonder how many GNOME libraries I actually need that aren't listed as explicit dependencies.

Thanks for uploading it to the repositories As it turns out, my local mirror was outdated... switching to another Canadian mirror helped

Oh come on, seriously, are GNOME libs going to eat out your hard disk ?

I just installed empathy from community, but when I go to add my accounts it says
"to add a new account, you first have to install a backend for each protocol you want to use"
so, where's the dependency for google talk?
Offline
Optional Deps : telepathy-gabble: XMPP/Jabber support
telepathy-butterfly: MSN support
telepathy-idle: IRC support
telepathy-salut: Link-local XMPP support
telepathy-sofiasip: SIP support
telepathy-haze: libpurple support
Google talk is XMPP
