Dialup connection broken after update

Hello,

I've updated my gnome desktop and it broke my dialup connection. Actually, when I dial, the modem dials as normal, connects  but firefox doesnot go to anywhere. I get the message: the page cannot be loaded.

I found this error message in the error.log. I dont know it has something to do with the problem.

May 26 22:27:52 myhost pppd[2905]: Cannot determine ethernet address for proxy ARP
May 26 22:39:14 myhost pppd[3065]: no device specified and stdin is not a tty
May 26 22:39:16 myhost pppd[3067]: no device specified and stdin is not a tty

I've also noticed that in the message.log I get the following:

May 25 07:25:27 myhost pppd[2810]: pppd 2.4.4 started by mak, uid 1000
May 25 07:25:27 myhost pppd[2810]: Using interface ppp0
May 25 07:25:27 myhost pppd[2810]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/tts/USB0
May 25 07:25:31 myhost pppd[2810]: PAP authentication succeeded

But I couldn't find tts/USB0 in the dev, but tty/USB0. I don't know how this was before update, I've never looked at it.

But the other distros' message.log says: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/tty/USB0

I don't know it has something to do with the problem.

Help would be appriciated because I cannot log on.

Thanks,
jmak

Re: Dialup connection broken after update

What dialer program are you using to connect to your ISP?

It looks like hardware issues are out because you can apparently dial and connect fine.  The problem comes somewhere after the initial connection; perhaps it's a DNS problem or maybe you need to set your default gateway.  A good dialer program (like wvdial or Gnome PPP) should do that for you, but there's always the odd chance.

Try pinging an IP address.

When I ping I get this:

mak ~  $ \ ping www.google.com
ping: unknown host www.google.com

Try pinging 209.85.171.100 instead of google.com and see what you get.

With the ip address, it works. I get this:

mak ~  $ \ ping 209.85.171.100
PING 209.85.171.100 (209.85.171.100) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 209.85.171.100: icmp_seq=1 ttl=238 time=254 ms
64 bytes from 209.85.171.100: icmp_seq=2 ttl=238 time=263 ms
64 bytes from 209.85.171.100: icmp_seq=3 ttl=238 time=252 ms

But Firefox still wont load pages.

Re: Dialup connection broken after update

Thanks for the links. I read through the  comments and I realized that I got dns server problem. But I am not familiar enough with the issue to find a solution for the problem. Could anyone help me with this.
