Assume you did a hal restart after changing 10-keymap.fdi?
<FOREHEAD SMACK> Nope... I restarted gdm. After restarting hal it worked just fine.
Thanks for the reminder
EDIT: I updated the wiki article

So if I'm understanding this correctly, Ctrl-Atl-Bspace was removed due to Emacs users accidentally hitting it and losing work? Please tell me that's not the case.

The case is that the Xorg devs are getting Ubuntufied...

I'd just like to thank vries for the workaround.

Same here- Many Kudos to vries! He's a GENIUS!
After today's updates I was going nuts as none of the fixes worked for me, until I finally found out about the /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/10-keymap.fdi edit. What a relief!
This has to be the most ridiculous idea and biggest PITA in Linux history. What possessed xorg devs to disable CAB by default I'll never understand- it's literally insane. Those who use it need it, and those who don't use it probably will never hit it by mistake, but even if they did, so what?

but even if they did, so what?
They may be a bit angry for loosing whatever they were working on.
But that's yet another reason why you don't want to be smart - it simply doesn't pay off. You play silly / clumsy and all the world will turn around _you_. So I want a golf course on the moon for Christmas. I hope the devs responsible for those sorry "updates" heard me.

karol, and anybody else who wants to bitch about - sorry, "discuss" upstream development decisions: please start a new thread in the GNU/Linux Discussion board. This thread is about a specific issue, which has now been solved.
Thread closed.
