Help with configuring WiFi

Network card DWA-520 (Atheros Communications Inc. Atheros AR5001X+ Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01)), driver ath5k from base kernel, networkmanager, WPA2. The only problem is low speed. So I need to configure my connection. When I try command

sudo iwconfig wifi0 rate 54M

my network stopped to work until I've reload driver ath5k or restart the whole computer. How can limit wireless bandwith to only 54Mbit? My access point is in the same room so signal is very strong.
Also is there driver for this card that can work in 108G mode?

Re: Help with configuring WiFi

Tried madwifi-svn works better than ath5k shipped with base kernel and don't dropped network when changing rate manually from console. The question is still - how can limit wireless bandwith to only 54Mbit at boot?
