Restore from backup.tgz get kernel panic

So I screwed up some of my dependencies and I thought I would just reinstall Arch and you a backup I made from this guide http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=35087.  I figure this backup is fine since it does not depend on Ubuntu its just a tar backup of everything, I followed everything and made sure no external media was mounted i.e. flash drives.  I ran the restore from a bare minimum fluxbox install, which is my previous WM/DE.  But I get a kernel panic which I imagine is due to the latest kernel update.

So my question is.  Is there a flag I can put in the restore to prevent the kernel from being restored?  I mean I have done a Core install so no updates nor have I installed anything past what is required to get Arch going.

Also is there a way I can mount the flash drive before I even config a WM/DE then restore from CLI.

Re: Restore from backup.tgz get kernel panic

You can use the same --exclude flags on restore I believe

Re: Restore from backup.tgz get kernel panic

/boot would be a good start, but that could cause problems with other kernel things in /usr/lib and other locations.

I would rebuild your system from scratch, then just extract your data (/home) and settings (/etc) once all your packages are reinstalled.
