[Solved] Basic Backup Program w/ GUI?

Hey guys,

After a bunch of tinkering and playing around with things I know that sometime in the future I going to have to do a reinstall.  I'm look for a system backup tool.  I have a tar script that works good but editing it is kinda a pain, su, vi, scroll deep into the line...  I'd like a basic backup tool that I can add files as I think of them (/etc/rc.conf, /etc/fstab...) with a line like "kdesu backuptool".  And I'd like a basic one.  I don't need things like automated backups, restore points...  Anyone got a thought on a basic backup tool that I could use?

I'll take a look at that.  Never got to try grsync before.

BackInTime. It's in the AUR, and my repo: (http|ftp)://repo.falconn.nl

And it's full of win!

Gonna check it out tonight.  Might be a little more than I want though.

.nl is cheap, irrelevant to us and doesn't require an Australian Business Number (ABN) to register so we registered that before the business was registered for all the admin/technical/side/experimental stuff, and the .com.au is for all the 'customer facing' stuff now that we have an ABN. Keeps it nicely segregated.

Re: [Solved] Basic Backup Program w/ GUI?

Hmm, I'm gonna have to try all of these.  Doesn't look like most Arch users regularly backup, or everybody uses tar wink.  I haven't bothered much myself since I began using linux, but I probably should make a practive of it.

Rsync + Grsync is a pretty good option. I use it, and if you need a sync tool for usb perhaps or cellphone, etc. You can use Unison and sync files.

But for backup I use grsync and it is very easy to use yet very powerful.

Hi,

I personally like Flyback.

Re: [Solved] Basic Backup Program w/ GUI?

Ok, phew!  Alot of testing smile.  I stated I wanted a real basic backup solution and most of these are pretty good.  I really like the KISS philosophy and just wanted something that just works.  Here's a quick overview of the backup programs I tried:

sbackup - didn't try - loads gnome-desktop and a whole load of dependencies so didn't try
luckybackup - only does one source directory per task.  Yes you can select many tasks to run at the same time but setting up a good 50-60 different files/folders would have taken a good amount of time.
backintime - (offshoot of flyback) can only do folders
peazip - broke in AUR
Q7z- can only select one directory

I tried all the suggestions but grsync which I need to get to.  I did find Kbackup though and since I'm a KDE user if fit in nice.

kbackup-478.jpg

It's nice and basic: just select the files I need and hit backup.  It also has tray support.  It's not perfect though.  At the time, it doesn't compress or split the archive but I guess it's not big deal to do myself.

Will look at grsync though after that I think I'm done. big_smile

Re: [Solved] Basic Backup Program w/ GUI?

There was krsync time ago at least for KDE3. I don't know if there is already a port for KDE4 but it should't be much problem since it is just a front end of rsync.

SpiderOak!  It backs your stuff up online... 2GB free but you can pay to upgrade

http://spideroak.com/

Not exactly sure how you would get that on Arch, but they have Fedora/Debian/Ubuntu/Slackware/ packages

Edit: also it uses QT which is good for KDE I guess

Spider Oak looks pretty cool, has a good interface, not sure but about using an online service though.

Tried Grsync but same problem as alot of the others: only does directories and would require me to exclude alot of files, so not real practical.  Gonna keep with Kbackup for now I'll just have to gzip and split them with this command:

tar czpvf - archbackup.tar | split -b 2240m - archbackup.tgz.split.

So I put in a bash script:

#!/bin/bash
# tgzsplit - gzip a file and split it into parts

if [ -z $3 ]; then
  echo "tgzsplit <nameoffile> <splitsize> <splitname>
gzip a file and split into parts - MB (2240 for DVD)"
  exit
fi

tar czpvf - "$1" | split -b "$2"m - "$3".tgz.split.

I'd like to point out that Q7Z can archive multiple files and/or directories, either by using the internal 'List' menu or one of the external context menus.

Thanks Chris, but please take the time to read the forum guidelines here - Section 9 deals with old threads.
