Making a USB stick in windows to install Arch on my laptop?

Hello all. I'm a relative newbie to linux as a whole (mostly *buntu), and I'd like to install Arch on my EeePC.   EEEs don't have optical media drives, thus I'd like to install from a USB stick.   I noticed in the wiki that there is instructions on how to make a bootable install USB in Linux, but can anyone enlighten me on how to do it from a windows box?
I've downloaded the Core ISO, and just need to make it bootable somehow so I can install. Thanks and I hope to have a great experience using Arch Linux!

Have a look at http://www.faunos.com/.  Never tried it but it appears you can do an Archlinux install from it.  Also search the forum for the trhead about installing Arch on EeePC.

I struggled with the same problem: when my new laptop was delivered the CD/DVD drive was still in backorder. I did not solve but bypassed it: there was a VMWare player installed in the default vista. I downloaded a debian-image and used that to create the boot-stick.

Re: Making a USB stick in windows to install Arch on my laptop?

I think this link could be of a help (how to create bootable Slax USB stick from windows):

http://www.slax.org/documentation_install_slax.php

Then - there is an interesting LiveCD project - based both on Arch and Slax - by godane. Link:

http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=43892

It is possible to install it and run it from USB stick (what is explained in above thread).

Hope it helps,

tami

Thanks everyone. Allan, does Faun do a "from the basics" install of Arch? I want to be able to follow along more or less on the wiki as I install, and if faun takes shortcuts or uses non-arch "main" distro repositories I'd probably be confused as hell.

There are many ways of installing Arch and also many wiki pages covering the various approaches - have a look at http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Cat … English%29. You can install Arch using pretty well any live USB Linux (getting packages via ftp), with faunos it is also possible to install the actual faunos system (see the forums).

Re: Making a USB stick in windows to install Arch on my laptop?

I'm trying to install archlinux from USB drive. I  prepaired USB with UNetBootin. It started perfectly but when I had to chose package sources no package list was found. After I did mount /dev/sdx1 /src problem was still the same. FTP mirrors are not working for me but the eth0 was up and worked.

Anyone know what is my problem?

1. Please don't ressurect old threads.
2. Don't use UNetBootin, we do provide usb images now.
3. What iso di you use?
4. There are http mirrors you can use if you have problems with ftp

I used UNetBootIn, because I was familiar with it. It doesn't work with the ftp install images, which is fine cos my connection speed required the core install image. Those worked.
