WPA2 suddenly stopped working

I had been able to connect to the office network via wpa2 fine up to the day before yesterday, and it all stopped working yesterday...
I was using wicd, and since the problem I tried various ways described in the wiki. Currently I am using gnome network manager, but connection gets stuck forever at the authentication stage. Wicd output shows that the connection's being dropped, and network manager is forever asking for the passphrase.

I don't exactly remember what I'd changed during these days... Probably nothing concerning networking, so I have no clue at all and feel really frustrated. Please someone give me some tip on hard to start diagnose the problem.

(I'm currently posting in Vista... I can see the connection type as WPA2-private, and the encryption is AES)

Re: WPA2 suddenly stopped working

did you check your pacman logs if anything related to wireless was updated?

Re: WPA2 suddenly stopped working

I did...currently on Windows, so I'm posting it shortly

Last time I checked, there was nothing related to wireless in the pacman log.

Re: WPA2 suddenly stopped working

i don't know what the cause could be, sorry. what you can try to narrow down the problem:

- can you connect to unsecured networks?
- can you connect to other wpa networks?
- can you reboot/reset this specific router?

Re: WPA2 suddenly stopped working

Thanks anyway smile

I can connect to unsecured networks (wicd with madwifi only, while wicd with wext does not work)
I cannot connect to other wpa networks on campus...
Perhaps I can try to reset the router, but I don't want to screw it up so everyone else in the office can no longer use the net tongue

why are you using madwifi/wext? shouldn't you be using iwlwifi these days?

Re: WPA2 suddenly stopped working

There are: wext, hostap, madwifi, atmel, ndiswrapper, ipw, ralink legacy, and only madwifi works with unsecured networks... I don't see an option in wicd to use iwlwifi though...

And wpa_supplicant does not know the iwlwifi as a driver... Strange.

I might have switched the hardware wireless switch on my Dell Vostro 1400 off on May 20...but I'm not sure. Of course the switch has always been on when I did all my wireless tests these days.

Re: WPA2 suddenly stopped working

it might be a good idea to start with a clean slate, especially remove your current configs and wpa stuff and start from scratch.

someone on another forum fixed a similar problem by setting a driver option which you could try:

sudo rmmod -f iwl3945
sudo modprobe iwl3945 disable_hw_scan=1

Re: WPA2 suddenly stopped working

Thank you. I tried your method, but it doesn't work. I also tried the noapic boot option, doesn't work either.

BTW, the stock Chakra livecd cannot connect, either.

Re: WPA2 suddenly stopped working

I am on my way of solving this problem! I just booted my machine with the Linux Mint Elyssa LiveCD, and I was able to connect to my office network with the TKIP encryption method. With networkmanager 0.6.6, I am able to select the security type (WPA, WPA2 and LEAP) as well as the encryption type (default, AES-CCMP and TKIP). Default and AES-CCMP always result in endless queries for password, but to my surprise, TKIP works! It is strange, because under Vista I can see that the encryption type is AES...

Anyway, my task remains as how to do the same thing with Arch. I haven't noticed any encryption options in wicd, and in the current networkmanager such options does not exist. Definitely a regression for me.

edit----------------
I tried again with Windows, and it turns out that the encryption type I see under the connection property dialogue doesn't really mean anything...
So TKIP it is!

wext = wireless extensions = 'standard'. iwlwifi uses wext.

1) Give netcfg from [testing] a go, try modifying the configuration in /etc/network.d/examples/wireless-wpa.
Documentation for netcfg on the wik: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Network_Profiles

If that fails...
2) create your own wpa_supplicant configuration. Something along the lines of this:

ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
ctrl_interface_group=wheel

network={
        ssid="example"
        proto=WPA
        key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
        pairwise=TKIP
        group=TKIP
        psk="not so secure passphrase"
}

Save it wherever you like, then make a copy of and modify "/etc/network.d/examples/wireless-wpa-config" as appropriate.

Hope one of those works. If you want a GUI, search on the AUR and there's some netcfg compatible gui's.

Re: WPA2 suddenly stopped working

Thanks for the help. However, when I issue the netcfg command, e.g.

netcfg /etc/network.d/examples/wpa.example

it complains that "Profile "/etc/network.d/examples/wpa.example" does not exist"
I get this result with every profile I throw at netcfg...

My wpa_supplicant.conf looks like this:

ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=wheel
ap_scan=1
fast_reauth=1
network={
        ssid="PHOAIB104"
        proto=WPA
        key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
        pairwise=TKIP
        group=TKIP
        psk="a silly password"
}

And it isn't working. I have no idea while network works with a one-year-old Mint LiveCD but not the state-of-the-art installation on my machine (both Arch and Ubuntu).

Re: WPA2 suddenly stopped working

The correct way to connect to use netcfg is netcfg <profilename>, where the <profilename> is the name of the file in /etc/network.d. For example, you'd copy one out of the example folder into /etc/network.d, modify it and it would end up as /etc/network.d/myhomenetwork. Then netcfg myhomenetwork.

That said, if wpa_supplicant on it's own doesnt work, netcfg probably wont either. Try removing the ap_scan and fast_reauth lines in that wpa_supplicant.conf.

If none of that gets you anywhere. run wpa_supplicant with -d. It's pretty verbose and long, but post that and I might be able to find why its not connecting.

Re: WPA2 suddenly stopped working

it looks like you are the next victim of linux AP connectivity (this is a problem that pops up one in a while). A lot of problems with this irrelevant of network card used.

see here:
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=73234

since I don't have problems (iwl3945/iwlwifi + wpa2 + +wpa_supplicant + dhcpd + wireless assistant) with connecting to ssid, it seems that this is related to AP.

I use dhcpcd 3.2.1-1 though as anything later is simply crappy (not Arch fault)

It seems that wpa_supplicant is blacklisting my AP after previous (too many) failures.

And the recently updated Wicd (1.6) would always reports back "bad password" after each try.

I might as well just give up sad

it looks like you are the next victim of linux AP connectivity (this is a problem that pops up one in a while).

I don't know if I can blame the AP, since I can connect with the same computer using a Linux Mint LiveCD which is a year old now. Regression, it seems to me.

Re: WPA2 suddenly stopped working

I'm not marking this one solved, because I don't know what happened, but today WPA2 started to work for me again, while wicd would always fail to get an IP address from insecure networks. WPA2 is more important to me at this stage so I'm happy, at least for now. Maybe it's because of the new  kernel.
