my system tools are completely blank...

this is a quote from the wiki...

Gnome System Tools
This adds several Gnome menu items under System->Administration, specifically user management, date and time, network configuration, runlevels, and shared folders through samba or NFS. See Gnome documentation.
# pacman -Sy gnome-system-tools
Pay attention to the post-install message from pacman.

I didn't get a post-install message, any one know what I need to do to get the tools setup correctly?

@jduped - I wrote that bit... you're saying your System>Administration is empty? At the very least you should have 'login window' which is part of the base gnome packages.

EDIT: I just verified that that package does indeed add the majority of the admin tools. I'm at a loss as to why yours is empty.

Ok

I do

pacman -Sy gnome-system-tools

its adds icons / programs under system > admin

network
services
shared folders
time and date
users and groups

the problem is I go into these icons and they load the program but network has no network hardware listed, the users and groups has no users or groups listed.

In the wiki section on this site it states I need to do something extra after installing the system tools and pacman will give me that info. This was not the case so I'm wondering what must be done after the tools are installed, so they bring in the needed information so I can use the tools.

does that make more sense?

I have tried removing, rebooting and reinstalling that package of tools...hasn't fixed the issue.

I just checked my gnome installation after seeing your post, and realized I have the same problem. "Users and Groups" comes up blank ...

EDIT: just found this http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=73614 topic. Looks like we are not the only ones.

I'd be interested in a fix to get these GUI tools working....
They're there, so I'd like to see them working.

I haven't looked into this at all yet. Due to the set up of Arch via non GUI is standard,
I'm wondering if this issue will get any real attention from the "gurus"....

I've used these tools in other distros, although not with the "cutting edge" Gnome package versions.

I have installed arch on 4 boxes so far

and I just found that this morning when working on my gf's box.

if you install in a tty session post install instructions include.

add user to stb-admin

#gpasswd -a user stb-admin

add stbd to the Daemons section of your rc.conf file.

done and done and still nothing getting propagated into those tools.

...I just noticed that the gnome-system-tools package in in the community repo. I just emailed the maintainer to see if he has any thoughts.

Yep same here, I installed this long time ago and it was working fine. This was probably broken in one of my updates, but I didn't noticed until today while I was reading this post and just took a look at my laptop. Now I'm getting more convinced on start using kde4 again, after all I prefer it but I have been using gnome for the last 10 months.

I dig gnome, I found the kde 3 line to be really glitchy...granted I only tried it in opensuse and kubuntu. It would probably work well in Arch as with most things.

These tools haven't worked properly in Arch since as far back as I can remember. I think there just isn't much effort being put into getting them to work. Most Arch users tend to favor hand-tuning of configuration files to the GUI and so it makes sense.

Yep, I think they should work too. I have just posted elsewhere on Arch foruums about the same thing. Some one responded by telling me that the tools have been broken for a while. Particularly for users and groups I much prefer to use the GUI. Looks like I'll be moving to another desktop environment where things work better.

oh don't give up on arch...

I've distro hoped over literally 100's and arch is superior in the sense that you build your own monster. I was just going to try and build a working version of these tools and see where it goes. I'm all about learning the stuff. I read though the admin section of the wiki. gave me good insight on user management via terminal. I don't find I miss the tool as much when I'm provided an alternative working way till I figure it out.

It seems to me like the big problem is that the tools maintain their own files and databases (maybe not an actual db) for their info. It's caused problems for others too. I had read before this bug, but I can't seem to find it now. Users would add a program and have to adjust their groups, but the group was not there. Maybe there's just some intermediate step that could be performed in order to get it to work.

I just installed Arch for the first time a few days ago and also ran into this issue. Checking the GST projects website however indicates that Arch is not supported. Thats kinda sad...

Judd Vinet: Pacman needs some love. It works well, but we have had plans to turn it into a proper library for a couple years now. Aurelien Foret has been doing most of the work on the library project and we're finally seeing the finish line somewhere off in the distance. In an ideal world, Arch would be my fulltime job and I would have ample time to work on pacman and the distro itself.
Jan de Groot: Pacman would need some work. Porting existing tools like gnome-system-tools to work on archlinux perfectly would also be on my todo list then.
