Sorry if I've wasted anyone's time but I've decided to call it quits with Arch on my laptop for now. A while after I posted this I figured that even if there was a solution that I was lacking patience to get this and other things working as well. I guess I wasn't expecting the setup to be easy, just more straightforward.
