sshd says "openpty: No such file or directory"

"All of a sudden" (after taking my web server down to single-user and then back up to run level 3) I cannot ssh into the box. sshd says "openpty: No such file or directory" when I try ssh'ing in.

I am using udev (passing devfs=nomount to kernel).

Any ideas?

Forget it ... a full reboot seems to have fixed it.
