After moving from Openbox to Awesome 3.2, I've grown akin to the desktop menu, however this new version of Awesome is throwing me for a loop.
I've got two questions. 1) Is it possible to get the Awesome-menu to popup on the desktop simmilar to the way Openbox does it, and 2) Can auto-generated menu items be made (the equivalent to Openbox's pipe-menus)?
I'm loving Awesome and the challenge that it's creating for me, but have yet to find much information as to how to set these things up. Any help is much appreciated

1) Yes and I'm using awesome 3.3
2) I've seen someone doing it; can't remember who though

I use awesome as well and I find I don't need a popup menu at all. I normally use the built-in launch menu (meta-r I think it's setup by default).

Ditto, I find it a ton easier than an openbox-esq menu.

9menu is similar to an openbox menu. Bad documentation though...

I have the same problem; ironically I was going to ask the same question today! while I love the awesome menu, I DON'T love the fact that I have no idea how to pipe in values for it from cache files. I mostly need it for Wine programs. I'd be willing to program something if somebody can show me a reference to a) freedesktop.org menu paths and b)any way that I can pipe my information in a format Awesome can read to awesome menu.

Sorry this is not needed anymore although I do have a problem with Wine programs STILL . Try out awesome-freedesktop-git in the aur and read the instructions from /usr/share/awesome/lib/freedesktop/README to figure out how to use it.
This solves your question about automatically generated menus (imo much better than openbox). Enjoy!
