Hi all,
I was keeping wicd v. 1.5.9 from upgrading because I couldn't get the newest versions to work. Today I saw yet another update of wicd, and thought things could work this time. Still, I can't get it to work. The tray icon appears this time, but wicd behaves abnormally. It can't connect to my hidden network, the wicd gui shows no network (although there are at least 3), etc.
Fortunately, reverting back to 1.5.9 was again successful. But is there any way to make the most recent version of wicd to work properly?
TIA

Like I said here: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 45#p569945
Even the developers of wicd recommend not to use hidden ESSIDs. It doesn't even provide any security profit.
Not to mention, that wicd works perfect on three systems here. But I don't use hidden ESSIDs.
EDIT: I talked to the wicd developers and here are the results:
<adam7> however, if 1.5.9 works, then 1.6.2 should work as well
But he said also:
<adam7> what might be good is if we could get hold of Wicd's log, iwlist scan output (as root) and iwconfig output
So please, post the mentioned logs here, adam is subscribed to this thread.

Thanks for your feedback.

I have used wicd since I started using Arch. Last month or so it started playing games with me it sometimes connected sometimes not.
I deleted all configuration files and reinstalled wicd, same result I try to connect about 5 times before it connects to my WPA protected network.
I went to UK for holiday (still there) and tried to connect to a WEP protected network no chance.
I thought it might be the driver but I then connected manually from the terminal and it worked.
I ended up installing networkmanager and the Gnome applet but it doesn't look good in KDE however it works.

Even the developers of wicd recommend not to use hidden ESSIDs. It doesn't even provide any security profit.
I don't think much of hidden ESSIDs either but does it not prevent, or at least make it harder, for people trying to crack WPA using pre-computed hashes as the ESSID is salted with the WPA key?
Hiding it means someone would first have to figure out your ESSID to be able to use hashes which speed up the the process dramatically. IIRC anyway.

u can try archassistant (in the AUR)

...It can't connect to my hidden network...
if you use wpa-psk try the following with sufficient permissions:
sh /etc/rc.d/wicd stop
remove any settings for your hidden network in /etc/wicd/wireless-settings.conf or remove the file if you don't mind loosing the settings
then create a file /etc/wicd/encryption/templates/wpa-psk-hidden with the following content
name = Hidden ESSID / WPA-PSK
author = Hans Muller
version = 1
require hidden_essid *ESSID apsk *Preshared_Key
-----
ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
network={
ssid="$_HIDDEN_ESSID"
scan_ssid=1
proto=WPA RSN
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
pairwise=CCMP TKIP
group=CCMP TKIP
psk="$_APSK"
}
then add wpa-psk-hidden to the top of the list in /etc/wicd/encryption/templates/active
sh /etc/rc.d/wicd start
click on the Wicd Network Manager tray icon
DO NOT AT ANY TIME use Network/Find a hidden network. This always broke everything for me.
just wait for the networks to appear in the list.... now if you are lucky you see the hidden Network with the corresponding MAC (e.g. 01:12:34:56:78)
click on Properties of this Network
choose Hidden ESSID / WPA-PSK as encryption type
enter the ESSID
enter the passphrase
click OK
Enable 'Automatically connect....'
click Connect
wait for wicd to do the job.
done.
at least this worked for me with wicd 1.6.2-1

this is very true but not very helping in my opinion.
