I know I should have looked up everything before updating my system, I didn't see any problems by updating xorg and nvidia. Now Xserver is down, it goes to black and will not let me change run levels via alt+ctrl+F(foo) and have to force reboot. I am unable to give you a log of what is up, but I am asking more to see if there is a way inside pacman or yaourt to downgrade the nvidia driver and the xorg packages to what they where before I upgraded. Thank you.

Assuming that you use grub, when it gets to the menu hit 'e' to edit. Select the kernel line and append '3' to the end of it (no quotes with a space) and save. You'll be able to boot into the console. You can use pacman, check the logs, whatever from there.
Take a look at this thread also. It may just be that your mirror needs to fully sync and another pacman -Suy will fix it:

i have exactly the same problem on my notebook with a geforce 7400go, since yesterday when nvidia drivers + kernel were updated i have the black screen, unable to swap to any console, nv works without problems though, so i can use it.
i went through all those logs and there were no errors in Xorg.log except for a warning
(WW) NVIDIA(0): ACPI: Error: Unable to find the DOS (Enable/Disable output
(WW) NVIDIA(0): switching) file path under /proc/acpi/video. The NVIDIA X
(WW) NVIDIA(0): driver will not be able to respond to ACPI display change
(WW) NVIDIA(0): hotkey events.
whatever this exactly means!
help is welcome!
Edit: there is nothing in my xorg.conf except the thingy that the nvidia module is loaded, i tried it with a full xorg.conf as well, but same result!

I can confirm this on my Acer with gforce 8800m GT 512MB RAM. Downgraded xorg-server to 1.6.2. and nvidia and nvidia-utils to 185.18.14-1 for now.
2nd broken package for today
Should have done something else than updating...

Have you tried to recompile the nvidia driver from ABS?

How do I downgrade? I know it sounds kinda noobish but....
Oh also to skottish, I did perform sudo pacman -Syu when i updated

Can not find it on my Var or in the other/"behind the curve" servers

Oh I found it in ARM (Arch Rollback Machine) I wonder if someone wrote a script for it yet.... anyway
It seems that the only way to recover from this is a downgrade. I have not yet written a bug report, and I do not know what to write for the report. If someone could help me, as "after downgrading xorg and nvidia I among others was able to restore functionality but the logs of myown and others do not say anything about a problem existing" sounds... kinda vague

Thanks heimdal! Pulling an earlier version from ARM resolved the issue for me.

Thanks that work for me !
I just modify pacman -R for pacman -Rd.
But i'm curious to know how nvidia packages broke all tty and lock screen for black screen without Xorg error

Worked for me too Just had to change i686 to x86_64... Thanks a lot!

Works for me too.
I did:
pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/nvidia-utils-185.18.14-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz /var/cache/pacman/pkg/nvidia-185.18.14-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz
because the packages were still in my cache
This unbroke my dell d620. No need to downgrade Xorg (xorg-server 1.6.3-2 here)

Same problem after upgrade yesterday.
I had to downgrade to 185.18.14, .29 didn't work (same blank screen). However with 185.18.14 I cannot enable compositing in KDE 4.3. This becomes neverending story.

Same here...nvidia 8600 GT and openbox, and downgrading did not work. Something like one in two boots doesn't get past the black screen. Strange thing is, I installed Arch on a seperate partition to have a look at KDE 4.3, and it hasn't happened there yet.
Swapping Openbox for KDE is not an option though

Had similar problem on my laptop, downgrading to .14 worked (with kernel 2.6.29)
However
Why don't you try to recompile to the nvidia packages from ABS? It's a much better solution.
I always compile the nvidia driver from ABS (for my personalized kernel), and still had the same bug. So compiling the driver probably won't help.
