Wireless locks up laptop (CLOSED - kinda)

Having just got b'slapped by B :-> ...

I just completed a fresh install. I used the ftp install disk, and using the kernel on that disk plus the wireless tools it provided I brought up the Atheros AR5001X which was recognized by the kernel.  From there I completed the installation.

After I rebooted, the kernel still recognized the wireless card, so using iwconfig, I attach the local router, and "ifconfig wlan0 up".  So far so good.  Upon running dhcpcd to get an ip address, the system will slow to a CRAWWWLLL.  The keyboard will be several seconds behind.  I can enter a keyboard command to bring the interface down, and all is well again.

I've checked all the logs and see nothing fishy there.

Other PCs attached to this router are OK.  Other OS in this computer are OK.

Thoughts or comments?

When you check the running processes there's nothing unusual? You're not using SLiM by any chance as your login manager?

No, not using SLIM and a glance at top shows really nothing out of the ordinary...

I booted back to the live CD, started the wireless adapter, and chroot into the installed system.  Wireless is fine in this fashion.

By 'checking all the logs' you also meant you checked dmesg?

Have you tried another DHCP client like dhclient?

Re: Wireless locks up laptop (CLOSED - kinda)

dmesg and everything else I could find.  I installed dhclient after chroot onto the drive (otherwise the system is essentially unusable).  dhclient had the same issues.  If anything, the system locks up more completely.

Pop the card out, and the system comes back.  :-(  Weird that there's no problems with the wireless tools on the live CD.

What live CD? Arch has no live CD's... Unless you're referring to the installation CD. If so, did you try downgrading? Maybe it's also a kernel issue?

Yes, that's what I mean the ftp installation disk.  I can boot to that and configure the wireless card OK.

I'm afraid I don't know how to downgrade the kernel.  I only am aware of what's in the package depot.  Are you suggesting using the image from th ftp installation CD?

Yes, if it's an old one. If not, there's always the Arch Rollback Machine (ARM).

There are no packages on the CD, I grabbed the FTP only.  I'll look at the roll back machine.

Re: Wireless locks up laptop (CLOSED - kinda)

This seems most likely to be a kernel issue.  2.6.27 does not exhibit this problem
