[Solved] Weird display errors after upgrade to nvidia 185.18.14

Hi everyone,

after upgrading to kernel 2.6.30.2-1 and nvidia 185.18.14-1 I experience very strange display errors:
- Instead of text often only black boxes or weird illegible characters are displayed, moving the mouse over it makes the text appear
- Sometimes text is missing entirely or portions of the window are repeated in y-direction, hiding other content

I didn't find anything useful on the forum search, hence this new thread.

I have a GeForce Go 6600 on an Intel Pentium M (Centrino) CPU, running arch i686.

My xorg.conf worked fine before and nvidia-xconfig does not propose any changes. Interesting to note is, that my GPU suddenly runs constantly on PowerMizer Level 0, before it was running constantly on Level 2 (max power).

Might the problem be related to this? http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=75459

Thanks for any hints or suggestions! I'll gladly post any config files or hardware info if that helps.

Nobody experienced this problem? Strange. Seems like I have no chance then but revert to the previous drivers, which means roll back to kernel 2.6.29. Or I'll wait until the new driver release finds its way into the repos. Hope this will happen soon...

Hello PapaNoa!

Yeah, nvidia is a kernel driver, you must downgrade the kernel too, it the other version of nvidia isn't available for this kernel.

Does it work with livecd, or on ubuntu/sushe e.g ?

Did you try to generate xorg.conf with X -configure too ? With nv, vesa, is it okay ?

I also have experienced (much worse) problems with the kernel upgrade:

Unfortunately the new 185.18.31-1 driver didn't improve anything sad I recently more and more often have the problem that my system freezes at some point or even the kernel panics. Looks like I have no option but downgrad, bye bye 2.6.30 hmm

I gave up and switched to nouveau, that solved all the display problems. Haven't tested the 3D performance though...
