Networked Backup Box - Bad Idea?

I'm thinking of using Arch to turn an old machine into a centralized family backup box. It would back up two local machines, and one non-local machine.

I know that it would be technically possible to back up a computer over the internet, but I do have some concerns with such a setup - off the top of my head, I am concerned about privacy (even with encryption) and ISP bandwidth caps (my ISP has been known to cap heavy uploaders and downloaders).

In general, is it a bad idea to do something like this? Does anyone have any experience with this kind of thing?

I dont see an issue with this.  I think programs like rsync implement incremental backups, so only the changed data would be uploaded or the internet.  You can also have it go encrypted over ssh.

Re: Networked Backup Box - Bad Idea?

I've got a script that does this the other way (outbound from home to rsync.net) -- if you setup your home server properly with ssh keys etc, then you should be able to do it your way.

It even does daily. weekly and monthly snapshots smile

Have a look in AUR for rsync-backup

Re: Networked Backup Box - Bad Idea?

Thanks for the information, axion419 and fukawi2. Good to know that this is feasible. If I end up setting something like this up, I'll try to share my experiences on the wiki or here on the forums.

Thanks again!
