What are the init numbers for logging in and out of X ?
I remember that in sidux init 3 logged you out of X and init 5 brought you back. But Debian was different. What is it in Arch?

It's 3 and 5 in Arch as well. By the way there's a description for this listed as comments in /etc/inittab

Good to know. So the next time I run an upgrade and it mentions that you can't install some nvidia update in X, I should go to # init3 which gets me out of X then run #pacman -Syu . Then run init5 to go back to X windows.

correct. but only if you use the inittab way. having gdm/kdm in rc.conf in daemons will not work as you wanted.
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

so what is the inittab way? I don't know what you mean. So with gdm in my Daemon list it wouldn't work?

with inittab way i wanted to say that you get rid of gdm from rc.conf, modify the default runlevel from 3 to 5 and uncomment at the button of the file gdm.in this way you can enter in runlevel 3 without starting gdm.
if you start gdm from rc.conf then this daemon will start in _any_ runlevel. so doing telinit 3 will not kill xorg.

so to use inittab, you have to take gdm out of the Daemon list, then when you are done, put it back in?
at this point my video works fine and I don't need any new nvidia upgrades. I'll leave it alone for now.

no. gdm in rc.conf is gone for ever.

so that means I don't have the usual gnome login screen, correct? I would be logging in everytime in a plain black boot screen?

No:

You change inittab to 5 and change the default login-manager to gdm

You won't see any differences when you boot, other than the gdm daemon will no longer be started (you'll have to remove it from rc.conf or stick a ! in front of it). You will then be able to do what you describe above.

Starting gdm from inittab and starting GDM from DAEMON's are 2 different methods, mutually exclusive of each other. You start it one way or the other. If you want to be able to use 'init 3' and 'init 5' to switch between X and CLI, then you need to use the inittab method, as described in the wiki link posted above by t4k1t
