phrakture: issues with ndiswrapper not setting essid

just installed arch. loving it, but having some issues getting my Linksys card working.

installed ndiswrapper from your repo, installed wireless-initscripts, installed bcmwl5 drivers.

however, setting the essid fails, not with an error, but it just doesn't work (tm)

#iwconfig wlan0 essid myessid mode managed key xxxxxxxxxx
#iwconfig

wlan0     IEEE 802.11g  ESSID:off/any
          Mode:Managed  Frequency:2.462 GHz  Access Point: 00:00:00:00:00:00
          Bit Rate:54 Mb/s   Tx-Power:25 dBm
          RTS thr:2347 B   Fragment thr:2346 B
          Encryption key:xxx-xxx-xx   Security mode:restricted
          Power Management:off
Link Quality:100/100  Signal level:-10 dBm  Noise level:-256 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0  Rx invalid crypt:0  Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0  Invalid misc:0   Missed beacon:0

not sure what the issue is, lsmod lists ndiswrapper as installed, etc.

any help is greatly appreciated. smile

oh, btw, using the stock 2.6.10-ide kernel and ndiswrapper 1.0rc2.

Re: phrakture: issues with ndiswrapper not setting essid

Hello shadowhand,

Try setting your key before setting your essid.

Try setting your key and then issuing the iwlist scan command and see if your ap shows up in the list.

Also, does the card power on when you load ndiswrapper? I had issues with ndsiwrapper not powering on my card after upgrading ndiswrapper to 1.0rc2.

Thanks,
Jason

Re: phrakture: issues with ndiswrapper not setting essid

if you need the bcmwl5 driver, I would suggest trying the "a" version - for the longest time mine wouldn't work even though everthing succeeded... it just wouldn't connect at all... turns out it was because i was using "bcmwl5" and not "bcmwl5a" - I don't know the details as to why they are different, which is the reason I provided both

Re: phrakture: issues with ndiswrapper not setting essid

i'll try that. in the case that i need to downgrade ndiswrapper, do you have any of the older versions? i was using 0.10 for a long time because it was the most stable.

Re: phrakture: issues with ndiswrapper not setting essid

you shouldn't need to downgrade... I don't keep old versions around, but it's as easy as changing a number, so I could do it on request - however, with kernel 2.6.10, only the 1.0 release candidates work, the rest will hard-lock the system (as far as I can tell)

Re: phrakture: issues with ndiswrapper not setting essid

just tried the bcwml5a drivers. still no good. ndiswrapper is loaded and reports that the hardware and drivers are installed. here's my list of commands to (try) to get it connected:

# modprobe ndiswrapper
# iwconfig wlan0 key xxxxxxxxxx mode managed
# iwconfig wlan0 essid xxxxxxxxx
# dhcpcd wlan0

the dhcp request times out and iwconfig shows that the essid is not set and there is no association with an access point. i'm really at a loss here... i've used 3 different distros with the wireless and they all worked fine. Gentoo worked fine, Lunar Linux worked fine (but doesn't anymore for some reason), and Knoppix still works.

any more ideas?

Re: phrakture: issues with ndiswrapper not setting essid

i'll try that too.

on a related topic, are there any 802.11g cards that are supported by the kernel without extra drivers?

i don't think that there are 802.11 modules in the kernel yet - for right now you just need extra modules... ndiswrapper is only for the cards which ONLY have windows drivers (broadcom refuses to put out linux drivers)

Re: phrakture: issues with ndiswrapper not setting essid

Well, did some more testing and searching. Apperantly ndiswrapper users have been experiencing problems with the WMP54g not setting the essid due to kernel/driver upgrades.

I tried using the drivers off the CD that came with the card, still no luck. Tried setting the key to something else to get association, no luck. At this point it looks like I am going to have to downgrade the kernel to 2.6.9 and ndiswrapper 0.10 to get it to work (the last kernel/driver combo that worked for me) or give it up. Since I hate to downgrade, I think I will just run a cable up to my room... was hoping that I wouldn't have to do it, but oh well. More stable than wireless I hope.

Thanks for the help guys.

Re: phrakture: issues with ndiswrapper not setting essid

hmmm did you try all the inf files on the CD? like I said, the windows drivers for my card had 2 different inf files there.  BCMWL5 and BCMWL5A - of which only the later worked.

I'll keep looking around but it seems alot of people have been running into issues where everything works they just can't connect to the AP

Re: phrakture: issues with ndiswrapper not setting essid

There was only one .inf on my CD, but I tried the b*5a from your repository and it didn't work either.

There are several posts on the ndiswrapper forums about the WMP54G and not being able to connect to the AP without anwsers.   :?

Re: phrakture: issues with ndiswrapper not setting essid

I got ambitious ( wink ) today and compiled my own 2.6.9 kernel and ndiswrapper 0.10. Wireless still didn't work and I still couldn't set the essid. I guess I have a configuration issue somewhere.

Re: phrakture: issues with ndiswrapper not setting essid

I was able to get ndiswrapper running with my new Arch linux install, but unfortunately it hangs after a few minutes - freezes up the whole machine and I have to hard reboot. I get a lot of 'wireless event too big' messages in my log. Anyone else getting this? Any solutions?

Thanks for your scripts phreakture - by the way there is a typo in the wireless script - last line, which is the end of case statement reads esa, but should be esac.

I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts...

Re: phrakture: issues with ndiswrapper not setting essid

the esac may be a copy/paste error, or wiki formatting...

anyway, for ndiswrapper:
if using kernel 2.6.10 and above you MUST use 1.0rc1 or greater of ndiswrapper.... otherwise it will slow network traffic to a crawl, segfaulting often.... jp_feilding and I discovered this upon the release of 2.6.10

Re: phrakture: issues with ndiswrapper not setting essid

Never could get it working. I ran a ethernet cable up to my room yesterday. The internet is much more stable now anyways.

Re: phrakture: issues with ndiswrapper not setting essid

I guess there's still no proper solution?

The strangest thing, is that on my Gentoo install I have ndiswrapper 0.12 and kernel 2.6.10 (vanilla), yet there are no problem at all. But Ubuntu and Arch Linux both can't set the ESSID. 'iwlist wlan0 scan' doesn't return anything either.

If anyone knows how to fix this, please let us know!

what card do you have... did you try "iwconfig wlan0 commit" after issuing the essid command? some cards need a commit

Yeah I tried that already.

My card is a:

0000:00:09.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 03)

I tried both bcmwl5 and bcmwl5a.

Re: phrakture: issues with ndiswrapper not setting essid

Well, I just replaced Gentoo with Archlinux. Now I'm fully dedicated to fixing this little issue smile

I am able to set all kinds of settings, like keys, modes, channels. Except the essid, which stays set at "off/any" no matter what I try. I suppose I could try downgrading the kernel... I'm going to figure out how little work that is with Archlinux smile

Re: phrakture: issues with ndiswrapper not setting essid

I just managed to get it working!

I did two things, but I'm not exactly sure which change made it work. First, I installed the bcmwl5 from my own card*. Then, I changed the PKGBUILD so that it would install ndiswrapper 1.0 instead of ndiswrapper 1.0rc2.

After I rebooted, it worked!

Now, about using the driver that came with the card. I tried this with ndiswrapper 1.0rc2 as well, but it didn't work. The difference with this time isn't just that I've used a new version, but I rebooted too. I didn't do that with 1.0rc2, so it *might* be that rebooting actually did the trick.

Either way, I'm totally happy now. Archlinux is AWESOME! smile

I am running the latest Arch 2.6 ide kernel.  I have been trying to get ndiswrapper working for two weeks.  My wireless card - Linksys WMP54G was never accepting the essid, no matter which driver i tried(4 of them) and countless settings.

Thankyou phrakture for your build scripts.....

Thank you Remenic for your solution of going back to version 1.0

Wireless is up! big_smile  big_smile  big_smile
