tor not working

I followed the instructions in the wiki for setting up tor and
this link says it isn't working.

I did the installation and setup part.

I installed the tor button too, I didn't realize that was essential right away.
Is there a a way to make all my internet traffic go through tor, like kopete and other apps, not just firefox?
