"Portable" (literally) file sharing?

So, on my server, I could install samba, sshfs, nfs, list goes on and on ... but what about making it "portable" on the client and server side?  As in, I'm at home and connected with my laptop.  Say I stand up and walk over to my friend's place.  The connection will drop obviously.  But then I come back home and open the folder and ... *bing* ... the server's share is there again, without any errors inbetween.  Something like this.  Does it exist?

I have also thought about this (for use from outside the network aswell), although I've not set it up, I guess a combination of autofs, sshfs and use of a local DNS to translate your domain name to not go through your router would do it. Please post if you find a simpler solution.

I think avahi is supposed to enable something like this, though I'm not sure how to make it work.  also, if avahi doesn't currently support this function, it would be easy to add.

I did something similar with SSHFS, I put an SSHFS mount in fstab and then used network scripts to (onup/ondown) mount/unmount the share. The only thing you need to do is make the domain use the correct IP depending on where your connecting from.
