I updated oss today, and now it doesn't seem to work.
Here's what I get when I try to stop it

and when i try to start it

╚═══===═══[~]>> start oss

Well, as you probably already know, the *.pacsave files are from the update and are the newer files (which due to the *.pacsave extension are not being used). Are there any of those files in /etc/modprobe.d/ with the *.conf extension? Just wondering, because if there are they should be the same ones you were using before the update, in which case I'm not sure why it won't start. If not, rename the *.pacsave files to *.conf, and see if that helps. Also, it has me to wonder, what files are listed in /usr/lib/oss/etc/installed_drivers ? There should be something about "oss_allegro" and maybe "oss_usb" in there, I would think. Not sure if I can help, just throwing stuff out there..

i do have a file /etc/modprobe.d/sound -- which lists my sound card.
Just for the heck of it, I copied the same file to /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf -- but that didn't help either.
The pacsave files even if present, are not a hindrance..so I just let them be.

No that won't do, the sound.conf is for alsa. Do you have oss in /dev?
ls /dev/oss

ls /dev/oss doesnt give anything, which means it got boinked. I tried re-installing oss to no avail.

This is the real problem.
paste the output of uname -r and locate oss_allegro.ko (run updatedb first)

That module should be in /usr/lib/oss/modules, but the latest OSSv4.2 doesn't seem to have it (maybe dropped, I've seen that some modules were not open sourced but I don't know if it is the case for this one).
I would try removing OSS and installing it again, maybe the problem will automagically solve itself
By the way, which sound card(s) do you have, maybe you actually need that module and you need to check the reason why it is not included anymore.

Seem like it's ALSA time for you buddy

"no mixers in the system" for me, too. At some point got it to give me a "no /dev/dsp" message, but that was a one time thing:(

I still have the older pkg.tar.gzip in my var ..I could always go back to that. I had oss-4.1_1052b and it worked.
But I am trying to get to understand what happened here.
Here's the output that Ellendig requested.

Any updates on this one?
I started using the older version again for a while, but I tried updating to the new one again and I still get the same error. Would I just have to NOT update it ever?

No ideas here except asking in the 4front forums. Searching there may not yield any recent results because there was a problem with the forum recently, just ask and you shall get an answer
Maybe removing the oss package and deleting all configs and reinstalling again may help, although that is quite unlikely.

You could also try buildilng oss-mercurial (even though it's still listed as oss 4.1 on aur)

Uninstall it and reinstall it... this has happened to me before... OSS needs to be relinked to the new kernel and for some reason it does not always do that on boot when a new kernel is installed (although sometimes it does). If that doesn't fix it... no clue.

will try that out. Although I will make sure that I dont lose the version 4.1, because if it doesn't work, I need to get back to it.
Should I just use the -f option in pacman. I don't want to have to remove all the applications that use sound before I can un-install oss :-(

To force remove a package without removing its parents:
pacman -Rcsd your package
Believe this is in the wiki. Yes??
Edit nope... ok, I added it... hmm

I dont think i should use the -c flag since i dont want to un-install all the apps that use oss. -c is cascade which means it will remove all packages that depend on the package being uninstalled. I think it should be
sudo pacman -Rnsd oss
Thanks for the hint.

Update : Uninstalled oss and then installed the 4.2 version. Still get the same error.
Eventually I went back to 4.1 and added oss to ignorePkg in /etc/pacman.conf. I just dont have the time right now to keep mucking with oss just so that it uses a newer version....especially since everything works in 4.1- as far as i know or as far as i am concerned.
