Hello,
I use XFCE 4.61 on Arch Linux i686. I try to enanle sound events in the
preferences. The depending packages libcanberra and
freedesktop-sound-theme are installed. I googled, but can´t find a
solution.
Can anybody help...?
Thanks in advance.
Regards
Juergen

Check in Xfce Options menu / Appearance /Sound events (or similar like that because I use it localized).

Soundevents are enabled there. But sound is not played...

I have both options enabled and get a few effects. There are not very much effects. I get one when minimizing windows.
Maybe you will need something like the sound-theme-freedesktop pkg.

echo $GTK_MODULES
see if it contain "canberra-gtk-module"
are you using OSSv4?

how you start your X?
do you havve "/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/40-libcanberra-gtk-module"?

I boot via slim per inittab.
On the strength of your help, I fond the solution. I inserted the content of "40-libcanberra-gtk-module" into my xinitrc file. This gave me an output for "echo $GTK_MODULES". But I couldn´t hear any sound. Additional I found the following bug-report: http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/14901
After adding the line: "/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/modules" into ld.so.conf and ldconfig as root, I can hear the sounds
Thank you very much for your help

I'm encountering the same problem but I have OSSv4 installed. On top of what cappuco described, I got the libcanberra-oss package from AUR and I configured gstreamer to use OSS.
But still no event sounds

I'm bringing this up again because both of my systems (stable and 4.7pre1) suddenly stopped giving sound events. Can somebody check for working system sounds or if the libcanberra setup has changed? We should get this working though it's a feature of minor interest.
