When I log in (not using gdm or any graphical manager), and start xinit, there is a 12 sec blank screen and then gnome loads up. This is only for the first time I log in. If I exit gnome, then start xinit again, it comes up in 2 sec flat. To reproduce the delayed startup, I have to reboot and login fresh. Is there a bootchart sort of program that can help me diagnose the source of the slow down?

Are you using compiz? Cause i am experiencing something similar.
Offline
@speedboy - as a matter of fact, yes I am using compiz I took fusion-icon out of my gnome startup and the problem is still there. Also confirmed it with a freshly made user too.

I don't use compositing at all and have the same problem. Unfortunately this issue remains in gnome 2.28
Only the first login after the boot is slow. If you logout and the re-login (same user) it goes really fast (2-3 secs)
the only errors I think might be relevant in .xsession-errors are these:
(gnome-settings-daemon:7779): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_param_spec_flags: assertion `G_TYPE_IS_FLAGS (flags_type)' failed
(gnome-settings-daemon:7779): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_class_install_property: assertion `G_IS_PARAM_SPEC (pspec)' failed

This is a "mee too"-post sp: Me too. Starting to get annoying. As I haven't gotten hibernate set up yet, I cold-start the computer at home, then at uni, then at home, and the delay is noticable. For me this is also just happens the first login per boot.
I don't have any clue as to why this happens but if anyone have an idea, I'm happy to try it. I am running gnome DE with metacity, no compiz, but xcompmgr for transparency and shadows. Don't know what else is relevant.
Offline
@tasos - exactly what I'm getting.
I made a new user and I have only this in its ~/.xinitrc
exec ck-launch-session gnome-session
When I log in (not using gdm or any graphical manager), and start xinit, there is a 12 sec blank screen and then gnome loads up. This is only for the first time I log in. If I exit gnome, then start xinit again, it comes up in 2 sec flat. To reproduce the delayed startup, I have to reboot and login fresh. Since it's a new user, there is no compiz or other things to slow down the startup, just the standard stuff, here is the output:

I've found a work around for this which removes the delay which at least works good for me.
Comment out all lines in your compiz.desktop file and then add compiz ccp to your autostart applications.
Hope it helps!

Sorry, was working on another issue at the same time and mixed the compiz.desktop and the display.settings file.
/usr/share/applications/compiz.desktop is the file I ment.
It depends a bit on how you've set up your compiz, but what you should do is to remove the compiz startup so it will start with the default decorator and then start compiz from the autostart instead.

@lazze - compiz isn't in the mix. I tried w/ a fresh user wo/ compiz and experienced the same delay.

Hmm, for me it was compiz, if I stopped using compiz it logged in immediately but when turning compiz on it took me about 10 seconds to log in, the computer just seems to be waiting on something. There's more people with the same issue as i had in this thread:

Can someone with KDE try it?
Well, I tried it on another box I have running xfce4 and I do see the error messages that I do on my box running Gnome.

I also experience this bug. Using the advice on the above mentioned thread (http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=78558) I did reduce a bit my login time, but not to naerly as much as a second login...
I have voted for your bug in flyspray.
I can also say that this bug used to happen in ubuntu jaunty, but it seems to have been solved in karmic. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/284366
It's not clear what happened to solve it, but it proves that it can be solved.
Also, after a bit of googling, it seems like the error we are suffering from is related to gnome-panel.
I will see what happens if I try to start my gnome-session without the gnome-panel...
Offline
Starting without gnome-panel did not solve the problem.
The error messages in .xsession-errors also persist.
Maybe this bug should be reported directly to gnome bugzilla?
Offline
Sorry about the triple posting, but one more thing that must be relevant:
On my second login (2 sec) the errors in .xsession-errors show up again, despite the quick login time.
Maybe we should be looking somewhere else for the error that causes the delay?
Offline
is there a fix or something? I still have this problem!

Anyone else?

Yep, same here. Same delay upon first login and the same errors in my logs.

Nobody found a fix? I also got this problem. I tried with nv, moving the setting folders (.kdemod4, .kde4), reinstalling every package and so on but no luck.

What was reported there (disabling floppy in BIOS and adding "!floppy" to MODULES) worked for me too. Thanks for the hint! This issue has been bothering me for weeks
