[SOLVED]WUSB54GC (rt73usb) drops connection every few minutes

This adapter was working perfectly for months, then a couple of weeks ago it started dropping the connection every 3-5 minutes. I have to actually physically remove it and reinsert it before the connection can be restored -- no amount of restarting networking, removing the rt73usb module or anything else will allow the interface to be recognized again. Now, in the last couple of days, it will periodically cause a kernel panic when I remove the adapter, requiring a hard reboot (can't even sys rq restart).

In the logs, I'm getting the following errors, repeated over and over from right at the time the connection drops:

I know the adapter is functioning properly because it works under Windows, and also under Ubuntu on this machine. I wish it was just a hardware problem!! I use netcfg for wireless functions, but I also tried wicd, just to make sure. I've reinstalled kernel26-firmware, tried kernel26-firmware-git, and reinstalled rt2x00-rt71w-fw a couple of times to make sure nothing was corrupted. No changes.

Like I said, this adapter has worked great for many months without a hitch, and I'm pulling out my hair trying to figure out what has changed in the last few weeks. The only things I've changed are: gone from ext3 to ext4 (full conversion per the wiki). I've gone through pacman.log to see if there were any relevant upgrades, but I can't see any in the last few weeks that seem relevant.

Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Thanks,
Scott

EDIT: Well, solved mostly by installing the 2.6.31 kernel from testing. It's dropped once since then with the same errors as above, but has otherwise been stable for several days now. Still don't know what the issue is, though

Re: [SOLVED]WUSB54GC (rt73usb) drops connection every few minutes

Well, I thought it was solved... or at least solved enough to live with. I had originally installed 2.6.31 from testing to try and fix this issue, and it substantially improved, but now it's gotten worse again. At home on a WPA network, it drops maybe once or twice a day. Here on this unencrypted network, it's going out once or twice every half hour. Same error messages as above.

I tried reinstalling, but ended up with the same errors almost right away. This bites!

Anyone have any other ideas to try?

Thanks,
Scott

EDIT: I tried rebuilding rt2x00-rt71w-fw from source. PKGBUILD has the incorrect source link. So I actually went to the ralink site, downloaded the (hopefully correct) driver package, unzipped it and copied rt73.bin to /usr/lib/firmware --overwrote the existing copy. I haven't got any errors yet, but it's only been 20 minutes so far. We'll see. I'm not sure if it's the identical rt73.bin that's currently in the repos or if it's different. Forgot to compare the two before I overwrote the old one.

EDIT2: No luck with the different rt73.bin. Also tried the new Ubuntu karmin beta and got the same errors -- and a freeze when I pulled the adapter out when it stopped working.

The adapter's bad. I hate it when that happens smile
