Re: nvidia/nvidia-utils 190.42-1 with xorg-server 1.7.1-1 segfault

My setup: dual monitors, with only 1 monitor rotated 90 degrees (via Xinerama, not TwinView); using nvidia drivers (latest 190.42); nvidia 8800 GTS 320 MB video card; Intel Q6600 processor.

My symptoms: after upgrading to the latest xorg-server 1.7.1-1, whenever I moved my mouse pointer over to the unrotated monitor's side, it would start blinking/glittering and my cpu usage would go up 100% on one of my cores (according to htop). As soon as I moved the pointer over to the rotated (portrait mode) monitor, everything would be back to normal. Strangely enough, both monitors worked fine in displaying all content/windows--no segfaults or anything; the problem (X slowdown, CPU usage 100%) only occurred when I moved my mouse pointer over to the left (unrotated) monitor. Another quirk: firefox on my portrait mode monitor would not display the context menu when I right-clicked on it (I didn't bother testing this behavior on the unrotated monitor, because of the problems stated above). (My problems seem identical to Ochi's post -> http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showpos … stcount=10.)

What worked for me:

quantumphaze wrote:

Packages that I downgraded:

xf86-input-evdev 2.2.5-1
xf86-input-keyboard 1.3.2-2
xf86-input-mouse 1.4.0-2
xf86-input-synaptics 1.1.3-1
xorg-font-utils 7.4-3
xorg-server 1.6.3.901-1
xorg-server-utils 7.4-7
xorg-utils 7.4-4
xorg-xkb-utils 7.4-2

I will eventually get around to updating them one by one to see where the point of failure it.

I downgraded the above packages and indeed my problem went away. The bug must be from the new xorg-server update. I am still using the latest nvidia drivers (190.42-1), with no problems. smile

It is very strange in that multiple-head setups (or perhaps rotated monitors?) are only partially affected by this bug. neutral

Re: nvidia/nvidia-utils 190.42-1 with xorg-server 1.7.1-1 segfault

I have an nVidia 8600M GS (it's in my laptop), and using xorg-server 1.7.1-1 and nvidia 190.42-1 everything is fine here. Is there any info I can provide that may help? Oh, I'm also running Gnome, so most of my apps are GTK.

this is weird..I got reproducible segfault of the Xserver (1.7.1) with latest nvidia drivers 190.42 and a not so old
nvidia 9800gt chipset..just open  www.godsoccer.com  with a browser or a part using qt webkit engine
(arora for example) and bum! signal 11 and segfault.
firefox and chromium works fine with that link...
I'll try to recompile nvidia and nvidia-utils for what it's worth , but who's to blame? nvidia , qt , or the new server?

I've nvidia 9600 gt and my problem is that 2 finger scrolling  touchpad went away after last update. Other problems related to nvidia remain that I can't use evdev & hotplugging. But I suspect some strange setting by nvidia, because non propietary driver will work flawlessly.

I have a nvidia 8800 GTS 640M and  I'm experiencing random X crashes since the upgrade to xorg-server 1.7.1-1 and nvidia 190.42-1.
They only happen when I use gtk programs (firefox, audacity, radiant..). No weird effects, just crash and done.

Re: nvidia/nvidia-utils 190.42-1 with xorg-server 1.7.1-1 segfault

For what it's worth, I've been experiencing these xorg~nvidia problems for some months now, like many others, and have posted some about it.  Earlier today I saw the following suggestion which I had never heard about before:

add this to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file:

Section "ServerFlags"
   Option "IgnoreABI" "on"
EndSection

I made the edit to xorg.conf, then prepared for the downgrade procedure since I assumed I would need to execute it once again, but much to my surprise, upon reboot it actually worked.  I am running a Lenovo T61 laptop with nVidia Quadro NVS 140M (rev a1).  Everything is now up to date via pacman -Syu.

If only I could figure out why my USB external hard disk won't mount anymore I'd be set...

Re: nvidia/nvidia-utils 190.42-1 with xorg-server 1.7.1-1 segfault

I'm just jumping into this and have not read everything yet.

HP Compaq 8510W, NVidia Quadro FX570

When updgrading today, X stopped working.  I had been using the "nv" driver and---before finding this thread---tried installing the latest NVidia (xx190xx).  After finding this thread, I reverted to the older xorg following one post in this thread.  Still no go with the NVidia "190" driver.
I finally got the system going by reverting the the "nv" driver.

Tentative conclusion:  There are more issues with xorg 1.7 than compatibility with the latest official NVidia drivers.

More work required, n'est-ce pas?

Re: nvidia/nvidia-utils 190.42-1 with xorg-server 1.7.1-1 segfault

me too - Acer Aspire 7730, Nvidia 9600GT

xorg-server-1.7.1-1 + nvidia-190.42-1

repeated crashes when using gtk-Applications

It seems to be a problem with xorg-server, I'm still using nvidia-190 but downgraded xorg-server and everythings works nicely again.

There is an interesting patch available in the last fedora rawhide Update for xorg-server, maybe that's what we are looking for: xserver-1.7.1-window-pictures.patch

Gtk apps seen to be working again lol.
I've noticed some lag too: e.g. it takes 5 seconds for the KDE run menu to appear.

But one problem... nvidia powermizer is locked @ 100% all the time. This is only after this latest xserv upgrade.

Everything was fine for me until that .901 update.

I get that "lag" that Ingar described. It's more like the X server freezes momentarily with only the cursor responding and it applies to the opening of every window. Downgrading to xorg-server-1.7.1-1 fixed it for now.

Running Kwin 4.3.3 on Nvidia 9300m (driver 190.42) x86_64

Found bug report http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/17037

Things were fine-ish here too.  Sometimes I'd get a X crash, but that was it.

-Syu to Xorg1.7.901...and EVERY time I click the "K" button in Vanilla KDE4.3.3, one of my cores on my CPU goes to 100%, and Xorg freezes--symptoms stay for ~15 seconds.   I can reproduce every time I click in said K button.

Re: nvidia/nvidia-utils 190.42-1 with xorg-server 1.7.1-1 segfault

It's the fedora patch that causes this. BUT:

1)With it --> no GTK crashes (like the one with Gimp) BUT with huge lag on KDE
2)Without it --> GTK crashes BUT without lag on KDE.

I think it's both Xorg-server's and Nvidia driver's fault.

Thanks to zico http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/17037#comment52785

Get xorg-server from ABS and edit the xserver-1.7.1-window-pictures.patch patch. Keep the first change and remove the later changes, keeping the last 2 lines.

- pPixmap = (*pScreen->CreatePixmap) (pScreen, width, height, pDraw->depth, 0);

     if (!pPixmap)
     return NULL;
###Delete stuff that is here###

Fix md5sums in PKGBUILD
It wouldn't compile for me unless libgl is installed which interferes with nvidia-utils which nvidia module depends on, so stop X and [K|G]DM and pacman -d -R them (remember to reinstall if you want to have a GUI again).

I can now have a usable KDE and play with Gimp.
Please mention if it worked for you on the bug report and try to get X to crash with GTK apps also.

I'd just like to confirm this, I get the exact same bug. Using xorg-server-1.7.1, patched or not, webkit based browsers crash xorg when viewing certain sites.

Unrelated to the above bug, I also got the KDE freeze bug with the patched xorg-server-1.7.1.901, but the extra package was just updated to xorg-server-1.7.1.901-2 which works perfectly. (I literally just updated abs, compiled xorg-server-1.7.1.901-1 without the problem patch, and then did a pacman -Syu and suddenly xorg-server-1.7.1.901-2 was there)

xorg-server-1.7.1.901-2 doesn't solve the problem for me.

Re: nvidia/nvidia-utils 190.42-1 with xorg-server 1.7.1-1 segfault

Seeing the following issues with ATI after updating my laptop:

- Random segfaults as described by others
- The lag also as described by others

Can anyone confirm this is not specific to nvidia drivers?
