using Symbol Spectrum 24

I posted this question a few days ago in kernel/hardware forum but found no help! Hopefully the networking gods can rescue me.
I have a symbol spectrum 24 CF card which I've connected via a PCMCIA driver to my thinkpad t61p. The card worked perfectly under fedora, after I placed the firmware in appropriate places.

With Arch's generic kernel I'm having problems though, and compiling the vanilla kernel didn't solve the issue either.

My AGN 4965 card has no firmware issues:

ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready
iwlagn 0000:03:00.0: firmware: requesting iwlwifi-4965-2.ucode
iwlagn 0000:03:00.0: loaded firmware version 228.61.2.24
ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready

With the symbol card:

pcmcia_socket pcmcia_socket0: pccard: card ejected from slot 0
pcmcia_socket pcmcia_socket0: pccard: PCMCIA card inserted into slot 0
pcmcia 0.0: pcmcia: registering new device pcmcia0.0
eth1: failed to initialize firmware (err = -16)

eth1: failed to initialize firmware (err = -16)

I placed firmware files in  /lib/firmware and later in /etc/wlan, and later tweaking /etc/pcmcia/*confs without any luck.

My endless gratitude to anyone who can identify what might be going wrong here!
