I just purchased an HP Pavilion dm3 (the model based on the AMD Neo X2 L335 CPU) and I can't boot the latest 2009.08 installer, it locks up during the kernel loading process. I presume I would need to add some esoteric kernel parameters on the kernel line in grub (ie. noapic) but I have no idea which one. I've successfully installed Ubuntu 9.10 on it so I know this thing will run Linux. Thanks in advance.

Did you verify the checksum after downloading the image? Did you choose the same architecture as Ubuntu? I don't know that CPU; is it 32-bit or 64-bit? In case you chose the 64-bit image, it may worth to try the 32-bit image too, except there are special reasons against it.

I tried the same the USB pen drive on another (and older) notebook and booted fine, was able to start the installation process from the same USB pen drive.

Is this still happening with the latest version of the distro you are using in the USB?

I have the same problem. I first installed Ubuntu 10.10 on it to test linux. Now I am trying to install Arch.
I am using the 2010.05 installer. It hangs when it says: "Setting Consoles to UTF-8 mode".
Any ideas?

I just tried something that worked for me. I removed the locale kernel parameter before booting. It works!
