I normally use cvlc to watch movies, but haven't been able to figure out how to cleanly terminate the program. the video can be terminated by Alt+F4, but I have to use Ctrl+C to kill cvlc, which is obviously not the best option.
Does anyone know how to cleanly terminate cvlc?
There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !

cvlc from a terminal would be say 'cvlc file.avi' run in the foreground (so no &) after you exit the player, cvlc should quit and you should be back to the command prompt?
Offline
cvlc --play-and-exit
You'll probably want to set that up as an alias...

This works when the file plays to the end. But if you use Alt+F4 to kill the video, I still dont get the prompt back in the terminal unless I do a Ctrl+C

VLC should exit cleanly via Ctrl+q. Unfortunately I've never came across an option to have cvlc terminate after simply closing the window.
